btg138
I'm hoping to get some feedback on the offer I just received from a Cardiology group in Arizona. I will be in clinic for 6 months (8-5) and then up to 60% in hospital doing consults with the SPs with the remaining time in clinic. Will eventually be on call (usually means being in the hospital) 1 weekend/month. Practice is an 11 doctor, 7 NP, 5 PA operation. All NPs and PAs do the weekend "call". Details: Salary - 80K clinic only, 85K when begin hospital work. No clarification yet about whether call is compensated or they assume the extra 5K covers that. benefits - PTO - 28 days 401(k), no match health insurance subsidy ($330/mo) all professional fees/licensing covered malpractice covered (checking on tail) 2009 AAPA salary report - median salary for AZ PAs <1 yr = $77,500, all cardiology median salary = $90K I think this offer is fair salary-wise, as long as the call is compensated, but I feel that the "benefits" are not that great. Any insight by those more experienced than me would be appreciated. Thanks!
marilynpac
I think this is a good deal and also great experience. Not too often do cardios choose new grads, they usually like experience in a related field(IM). After this if you want to go CVTS..you could have a better chance. Good luck in what ever you decide, and congrats!
PAinNJ
I wouldn't necessarily say its a good deal IMO. The salary is 76k (after accounting for your medical, which should be standard at other jobs). Do they cover your family (if any)? NO match... how about CME time/$$? I would be very careful to get in writing (if possible) what this call consists of and exactly what is expected and how its compensated before you join. If its really being in the hospital for the entire weekend, then that should be worth atleast 15k extra on top of your base. Essentially, you'd be working for 12 days straight and an additional 5k a year for 12 entire weekends is laughable at best. If the additional 5k is call compensation, I personally wouldn't take it, unless I really really wanted to get into cards. Pay is under average and the weak benefits package doesn't help either. btg138
Thank you for your input. Since the job is in AZ and salaried, they told me there is no extra pay. I countered with $90K and $98K after call starts. I agree that the benefits and extra pay are both weak, so I tried to compensate for that. We will see how they respond. btg138
After a week or two of going back and forth, their final offer was no change of their offer. They do pay all licensing, AAPA, DEA, and credentialing at 4 hospitals, and said they would reimburse for cardiology conferences for CME (no travel or hotel, just registration). I have 5 interviews this week, so I'm telling them no. QOL seems to be lacking with this group. Thanks for all of the input.
Moderator EMEDPA Posted April 23, 2011 Moderator Share Posted April 23, 2011 make sure to get full medical/dental/vision for yourself and your family. I wouldn't even interview for a job that didn't offer that. dea and state license are nice but not a deal breaker. life insurance and long term disability are nice as well. some kind of reasonable plan for retirement is also essential.
