Please Help! OBS unit vs FM - new grad offer

Recommended Posts

Offer 1:

Family med.  Great doc and group.  One other PA.  Doc is super nice and wants to mentor.

100K/yr

70% health care paid for

401K

2 weeks PTO

5 paid holidays

2 days CME

1K CME

8-5 with two Saturdays a month and subsequent weekday off.

Family med practice, primarily adults but accepts 2 y/o and over.  Some walk in.  Under served.  Cheaper part of town.

Offer 2:

Emergency med - primarily observation (obs) unit with eventual training for main ED.  Established corporation hires me to work at big time hospital.  Doc and lead PA seem nice but only interviewed over phone.

70/hr

Dental, no health insurance

401K

No PTO, no paid holidays, no days off for CME

2K CME

Very busy ED, obs unit accepts about 12 dx, has telemetry for every bed, plan is to cross train into ED until comfortable.  Nicer part of town.

9 guaranteed shifts a month but was told can get 16 shifts a month.

OBS schedule is four 9s a week, shifts are 6-3 or 3-11, no nights.  ED schedule is 9h shifts, potentially nights or days did not discuss.  ED pay is higher then obs unit pay (lower base rate but high RVU incentive).  OBS is ran by PAs and resident at night.

I am very torn between these two and have to decide fast.  I enjoy in-pt/ED more than FM in general, but I have never really been in an obs unit besides a couple consults when on various other rotations.  I loved everyone at the FM practice especially the doc, however I do get tired of DM/HTN/well visits and definitely prefer sick visits.

One plus for obs unit is a four day work week, however you may work weekend, holiday, etc, and there is no contractual guarentee for > 9 shifts/mo despite what was told to me during interview.

Would LOVE anyone's advice, new grad or seasoned vet.  Thanks all.
