BTillema
First of all, I apologize if this has been covered in another thread, but I am looking for advice from married students about filing taxes and applying for financial aid. Anyone been through this? I am wondering if it would be more advantageous for my husband and I to file our taxes as "married filing separately" if I am also applying for financial aid. My husband is a teacher, and I have been working only minimally as an on-call athletic trainer the last two years while finishing pre-reqs. So together, our income is not that great, but separately, it is even less impressive. So I am wondering if I would get more aid if we filed separately as opposed to filing separately. Any advice is much appreciated!! Thanks in advance!
Administrator rev ronin Posted February 24, 2014 Administrator Share Posted February 24, 2014 Probably still best to do married filing jointly, just like it is for 1040 purposes, but I would recommend asking the financial aid people at the schools to which you're applying. In my case, I made about 98% of the household income, so it wasn't an issue.
BTillema
Thanks so much for your response! Calling the FA office is definitely on my to do list for tomorrow. My husband seems to think I will qualify for more aid (which we will need) if we file separately. His goal is to avoid private loans, but I am not so sure that is realistic.
