CASPA Confusion

Recommended Posts

1st Post...

According to the question/answer portion below of the CASPA site, does CASPA calculate your GPA based on the retake course if the "specific program" allows repeated course grade? I received 3 Failing grades due to medical circumstance in my early 20's, and was unaware of the college's "retospective withdrawal" option until this year. I would like to know if I retake the courses (even though I have already retaken them at a different college) and get a better grade (considering this school does replace old grade with new), will CASPA still record my failing grades regardeless? Just curious because since I have been back to school I have done wonderful, yet those F grades haunt me everyday. Thank you to all those who respond...Sorry if question seems confusing.

Q: My undergraduate institution granted me the forgiveness policy on two of my repeated courses and they were not calculated into my GPA. Why are they now calculated into my CASPA GPA?

A: CASPA will calculate both the original course and the repeated course grades in your GPA. Check with specific programs for their individual policy on repeated courses. Some programs may recalculate the GPA using only the most recent course grade. Some programs may continue to use both grades in the calculation.

CASPA will calculate all grades earned even those retaken. Once submitted to each program it is up to the respective program if they want to recalculate your GPA and drop the F's that were replaced with better grades. So regardless of what your grades are on a retaken class CASPA will always count the F's. This has dropped more than a few GPA's of applicants but does not mean you will not get in. Just have a concise explanation in your personal statement so the ADCOM has a reason to grant an interview so they can learn more about you.

PAMAC has a good point though- if it is actually removed from the transcript it wouldn't count (W instead of F). I had some Ws to put on CASPA and they did not alter the GPA.

However all attempts would count in the GPA calculation if there is a grade so if the F is on the official transcript you definitely need to list all of the attempts. CASPA does not calculate your GPA by school, just semester. Also if your GPA can hold the Fs w/o being to ugly, it could possibly be a good jumping point for your narrative (I turned my life around after X crisis resulted in failing in my 20s, etc)
