I'm in my 3rd year of practicing as a PA, mainly in emergency medicine in the main ED. I've been doing some locum tennens work in other fields and next month I'm returning to emergency medicine working in the main ED. I want to brush up as well as continue my learning.  I will have an hour commute, which is why my interest is in podcasts. I'd like to hear everyone's favorites. I've run across some great ones others I've wasted my time or nearly drove my car off the road falling asleep, ha.

after reviewing this http://www.physicianassistantforum.com/index.php?/topic/6097-help-tips-and-suggestions-for-starting-new-grad-er-job/ I have tried a few out, but would love to hear more of a consensus.  I listened to nearly all of embasic.org and thought it was great. It was straightforward covering common complaints and used research to support the best evaluation and management. I'd love to have more like it. Any recommendations?

emrap- Cutting edge stuff, but a little too much analysis and depth for what I'm looking for. I can see why people like it, but I think for my time at this point in my career there's other podcasts that would be more valuable to use with the time I have to study. Though I did find just reading their PDF's is more time efficient.

www.emedhome.com - Has anyone given this a shot? It was mentioned in the post listed, but I haven't heard of it otherwise. Unfortunately there's a cost, so I'd rather not throw $100 out, and not like it.

http://smartem.org/ - Very well done and great info. I wish they had more podcasts.

http://lifeinthefastlane.com/resources/emergency-podcasts/-  Tried one of these today, honestly it wasn't my favorite. I'll try others, and get back on it.

Thanks for reading, if you've tried any of these or can recommend one I'd appreciate it! There's tons out there, but if you have a favorite please add it for everyone!

ERcast hosted by Rob Orman. Latest episode was a no holds barred cage match comparison between acetaminophin vs ibuprofen for pain/fever. He also occasional hosts emrap in place of Mel....and it's free

Puscast is a nice short ID pod cast by Mark Crislip

I'm a big emrap fan, but occasionally I skip the pieces that I'm less interested in. The subscription give you access to old episodes so there's no shortage of topics. Plus there so much cme that I haven't needed to log other cat1 credits for my last 3 cycles.

I'll mention emcrit as well but may also have the aspect of emrap that isn't as engaging for you

Thanks for the info. Maybe I need to give emrap more of a shot. The few podcasts I have listened to at this point seemed as if they were reading a study to me verbatim. I'd rather have their interpretation and how it can be applied to everyday practice. Probably just a few that weren't my flavor of learning, I'll try a few more.

Any other recommendations or reviews of podcasts?

You already know EMBasic, and I'll echo the recommendations above for ERCast.  Those are probably the best two in terms of being a broad overview rather than a deep literature dive?

To add to what's been said above, there are some video podcasts out there that are good as well.  Obviously that probably wouldn't work too well on your commute, unless you just listened to the audio portion!  But I'll share regardless as they haven't been mentioned thus far...

Emergency Board Review - designed for residents EM prepping for their exams, so it tends to skew more towards testable textbook info than clinically relevant pearls?  But still, good for a broad overview - I'm using it now to prep for the EM CAQ.  The "borrowed" video podcast they have at the final link that's a Comprehensive Rapid Review is pretty great for that purpose.

UC Irvine's Emergency Medicine Lectures - again, a video podcast, but they've been archiving them from their EM Conferences for several years now and they're free for the taking.  Depending on the speaker (bumbling resident versus guest lecturers like Dr. Mallon or Birnbaumer, both of who are EM heavyweights) they can be blah or excellent!  They also have a whole series of U/S video podcasts I've not even delved into yet.

Last but not least - this list is pretty exhaustive:

Hope that's of some help - welcome back to the ED :)

EMedHome is the best $100 you'll ever spend for podcasts, videocasts and CME.  Amal Mattu's podcasts are very good, but even better are the video lectures from many of the big EM conferences around the country.  Here's a list of the ones from 2013: Crashing Patient Conf, CAEP 2013 Annual Conference, AAEM Scientific Assembly, Canadian Acad of EM, UC San Diego - Critical Care & Emergency Medicine, NH ACEP's Managing Medical Emergencies.

Example: They just posted Michigan ACEPs 2014 Critical Care Practice in the ED from January: 6.5 hrs of CME.

High Dose Nitrates in Acute Heart Failure Phillip D. Levy, MD Optimizing Therapeutic Hypothermia After Cardiac Arrest Robet Neumar, MD Playing with Compressed Air: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Robert Sherwin, MD Trauma: Damage Control Resuscitation Victor Caba, MD Team STEPPS in the Critical Care Environment Patrick Pettengill, MD When Bad Things Happen to Good Kids Lee Benjamin, MD Post Cardiac Arrest Care, Sans Hypothermia Brian J. O'Neil, MD ECMO Applications for the Emergency Department Kyle Gunnerson, MD Updates in Sepsis Emanuel Rivers, MD Update on Calcium Channel Blocker Toxicity Keenan Bora, MD Management of Pediatric Sepsis Prashant Mahajan, MD Anticoagulant Emergencies Ronny Otero, MD Stroke Management in the Emergency Department Christopher Lewandowski, MD Traumatic Brain Injury – What Can We Do in the ED? Thanks for the ideas everyone. I'll have to look into EMedHome further.

I looked further into emrap. I've spent about 2hrs a day listening to it and have to admit I was wrong. It's great material, not at all what I thought it was and honestly pretty damn funny at times. In my defense I mostly just knew the PDF's. I was also told by an ED MD that it was probably too in depth for me at this time in my career. That MD being my older brother, condescending &^*#@....Anyway, for anyone that reads this I highly recommend starting at embasic and if you enjoy podcasts as much as I do go to emrap. Great for up to date learning for your commute and gym time.
