Dear Members of the Society of Emergency Medicine PAs,

As you know, SEMPA and ACEP have struggled to communicate since about 2018. Since that time, there have been numerous Council Resolutions, Policy Statements, and a number of social media campaigns that have criticized EMPA practice, which has driven a wedge in what was previously a mutually prosperous relationship.  It divided physicians and PAs and lumped PAs with NPs, thinking we were out to take their jobs. Multiple other factors like COVID, the WorkForce Taskforce estimate, and NP independent practice all contributed to the narrative to divide us from our partners. Despite this, EMPAs and physicians all across this country have a symbiotic relationship that began five decades ago and continues today in most EDs across the country. Over the last year and a half, we have persisted against a strong headwind to develop positive and ongoing communication between the SEMPA and ACEP leaderships. This has been a diligent effort as our respective organizations have most things in common. These haven’t been the easiest conversations either. Since this effort began we have seen a decrease in the negative tone. But then we saw their last Instagram post, which most of you are aware of. On seeing this, we discussed this with the ACEP leadership. They were unaware of the post. They reviewed it and we were assured that it would be removed immediately, and it was. We applaud this progress. Our conversations continue as we work toward solutions in emergency medicine. The SEMPA Board engages positively with our physician colleagues while maintaining steadfast advocacy and support for EMPAs. We continue to pursue these relationships with other emergency physician organizations on your behalf.

On another progressing note, SEMPA is under new management with Lutine Management Associates and has concluded our shared service agreement with ACEP. The SEMPA Board of Directors had our first board meeting with our new Executive Director, Amy Cheatham, and staff for a fresh and new beginning. We are sure you are already noticing changes, especially on the website. As we transition to the new membership management software, all members will be required to log in and reset their passwords. You likely have already seen an email to address this. If you are having difficulty, live staff are available to assist you in this. We will be assigning task forces for a number of upcoming projects, one of which will be a thorough website content review. There will be much more to come. We are already welcoming back many previous members excited to get back in the game.

Preparations are moving fast for SEMPA 360. Early Bird registration ends soon, so hurry. Hotel rooms are filling up at the Sheraton, you can secure yours on the website. Reconnect with your classmates, colleagues, and friends while obtaining the best CME for the money and the best emergency medicine has to offer.  Refine the skills that you can use in the ED the very next shift. We look forward to seeing you all April 15-19. Tell a friend and bring a friend. It's going to be a party in New Orleans, and you’re invited. Come visit us at SEMPA.ORG for a new look at your SEMPA.

See you soon!
