alnK
Hi all! Good luck to all of this year's applicants! I have interviewed at Duke the last two years. Unfortunately, I was turned down both times. =( Duke is also the only school that has granted me an interview both years so I'm a bit confused. Both years, I waited until April and called in for the admissions counseling over the phone. I guess this past cycle, some of the committee members didn't get the sense that I wanted it badly enough. I'm really not sure where to go with that. I'm generally a calm, mellow person. Perhaps this gave them the wrong impression? I really was super excited to be there both times and I would be ecstatic to go back again. I'm really struggling with this but I really want to make this happen. I've been working towards this for several years now and I feel like I'm just about there. Maybe someone out there could shed some insight on the situation. Anyone else experience anything similar or have any tips? Thanks so much in advance!!!
Just Steve
"I guess this past cycle, some of the committee members didn't get the sense that I wanted it badly enough". I am curious to how many other schools you applied to. Did you cast a very small net, thus giving the AdCom the impression you were not trying hard? What did you do to improve yourself/your application from year to year? Gain more HCE? Take upper level classes? Shadow? Community outreach? Mentor? If your self growth was somewhat limited from the first year to the second year, that may hinder you a bit. But your question is really hard to armchair quarterback..so many variables. alnK
Hi, I applied to about 10 schools last year. It was really all I could afford. I did not know they looked into that sort of thing or even took it into consideration... It was also my second time applying so I figured that would indicate that this was not something I decided to do on a whim. In the time between the first and second set of applications, I worked with a science outreach program, finished a second year of post bacc courses. At the time of the interview, I had just begun a job in clinical research working directly with cancer patients. My past experiences include being a physical therapy aide which was a lot of hands on pt care, donor tissue recovery tech, exercise physiologist, and orthopaedics lab research... Hopefully this year will be better but it's really hard to pinpoint where I should focus my efforts. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
