Hi Everyone, I decided I wanted to start this thread for the new application cycle. I have a question for anyone who may know, and feel free to ask/answer any other questions on this thread! Does anyone know when CU Denver posts their CASPER test dates?

CASPER itself posts it’s dates, it’s an independent program so I’d look at their website as long as those dates are good for this upcoming cycle. FYI I was in the 50-75th quartile which they tell you like a month after ur test.

general advice and opinions

CU DENVER

Upcoming folks should  allegedly expect something like group, Individual, and literal “team builder” exercise session but honestly a lot of PA schools will follow suit. Make sure your reason for wanting to go here is super solid and expect some “poker” face interviewers that won’t smile, etc. They like to ask what about how you study/ will be a supportive class mate,**  why CU & how you fit their program mission**, which specialty you want to go into (Keep in mind they favor primary care and pediatrics and don’t say you’re “open”, choose something) for individual interviews.  Overall they want to get to know you, don’t be afraid to have personality, unlike I. the group interview is generally a  ethics based question like what do you do … FOR EXAMPLE… if your supervision physician tells you to do something that you don’t agree with what do you do

Notice that their matriculation GPA is higher than other PA schools generally, so  I do not recommend applying under a 3.4 GPA as they generally choose higher GPA over ANYTHING ELSE, GRE and healthcare hours are more of an after thought …  they seem to go from highest GPA to lowest post interview selection.  They will call you 1-2 business days after your interview date to let you know if you’re in, otherwise if you don’t hear back quickly, you’re waitlisted or rejected, which you’ll know 2-3 weeks after your date. They’ll let you know if you’re the top three in the waitlist and generally only 3-5 make it off the waitlist.

MESA

i didn’t interview with mesa, just know they want nothing to do with you if you haven’t lived in the areas in colorado that they want, you’ll know what I’m talking about when you read their website, don’t even try if not, it’s a waste of your money. I don’t have much else to say here, I’m sure the folks over there are great also the city of grand junction is far from other major cities in colorado. If you’re a city ✨ material girl✨ it might not be for you.

Rocky + Comparing the other schools (tuition, faculty, location

Just keep in mind that rocky vista is on probation + flagged for Financial reasons by getting veteran affairs for GI bill folks AND costs 100k in tuition alone. Here is why they are on probation . I’m not exactly sure what happens if they completely lose their accreditation, I think current students finish up and incoming students are cancelled.

Rocky vista recommended students take the PACAT but I did interview with a poor GRE score. Red rocks and CU tuition is between 50-60k for in state, just know that since CU is a three you program, you’ll have an extra year to accumulate interest in your debt + living costs unlike red rocks and rocky vista. Red rocks is the cheapest. Red rocks prefers healthcare hours and seemingly older students over anything else, not as much of a high GPA. On that note, I’d be hesitant to apply red rocks straight out of undergrad, although, they did have like 1-2 person in their very early 20s matriculate.

red rocks also had the friendliest faculty, CU was mostly okay, and Rocky vista had more of a colder vibe. Don’t overlook red rocks because it’s a community college, I’ve worked with one of their alumnus and they’re great. I’ve also worked with a Rocky vista student.. they seemed to be doing okay but they were having problems with their program.

and their locations…

red rock’s location is in a pretty safe and boring part of colorado. CU denver is right next to colfax road, where crime tends to happen and the  surrounding area doesn’t look great. the campus itself is safe and has a police presence  just know that there’s not much of a social/party scene in your immediate areas. rocky vista is in a safe location. My SO goes to medical school at CU and he pays 2,000 a month to live near  campus. I feel as if the other schools might have more flexible/cheaper living options since their surrounding areas aren’t as crime ridden.

as far as your clinical rotations go, you can generally expect that older schools like red rocks and CU will be better established with preceptors.

Lastly, if you’re a student of color and are really looking for a place really really rich in diversity, colorado doesn’t have much. Try looking into southern or costal states but in state tuition is in state tuition. Chapman university offers full rides to some of their class

I’d say I hope this helps but I know it does Hahahah. cheers. Join the r/prephysician assistant subreddit  on Reddit everyone. It’s just my advice, take what you need and ignore what you don’t. Keep working towards your dreams everyone, it’s okay if it takes a few tries.

Hi everyone!! So I’m really struggling with the autobiography. My self identity has largely been surrounding academics, and I feel as if I touch on my undergrad courses and experiences too much compared to actual “hobbies” outside of academics. I hope that makes sense. I know they state that this isn’t a personal statement or “why PA”, so I do avoid going into depth there, but I do mention wanting a career in healthcare, etc. any tips or comments on how you guys structured yours? Any help is appreciated 🙂

I just started with a quick synopsis about where I was born and what my family life was like then did a quick gloss over of what I was like as a child through adolescence.

Went into a little more depth with highschool about athletics and academics.

I then went into greater detail about university and experiences such as studying abroad.

Then finally I talked about what I did during my gap years (travel and more travel) where I am now and how COVID altered my trajectory, etc.

I took it VERY literal and portrayed, as much as I could, an abridged version of my life story.

To me, I took this as an opportunity to expand on information that is not in my application already. I talked about my childhood, some of my hobbies, things that impacted me in high school, etc. To me, I felt as though this space would be best utilized by discussing things they do not already know about me, but I know there's no wrong answer either!

Does anyone have any insight on what is a considered a ‘good’ Casper score? I just got my results back and I am in the 3rd quartile. I’m unsure if this is a good or bad thing for my application.

Direct quote from Altus Suite- “Quartiles tell you how you scored relative to your peers. For example, applicants who scored in the fourth quartile scored higher than applicants in the first, second and third quartiles, meaning they scored higher than at least 75% of all applicants. Applicants who scored in the second quartile scored higher than applicants in the first quartile, but lower than applicants in the third and fourth quartile. Specifically, this means that they scored higher than at least 25% of all applicants, but lower than at least 50% of all applicants.” So third quartile means you scored higher than 50% of applicants and lower than 25%. Hope this helps!

Has anyone who submitted their application and supplemental receive any notice or updates from the program yet?

I received the email that the application was complete, and said that interview invitations are sent from July through October. Nothing else, though. Hopefully they'll start sending out invites/notifications soon... I hate the waiting!
