MDPDPA22
Hi! I was speaking with someone regarding EM fellowships. This person did not do a fellowship in EM and ended up working in another specialty after about 2 years. Their question to me was is if I for some reason do not like EM a year or 2 after completing a year of fellowship, did I just waste a year? There are people who have completed an EM fellowship that have taken a job in another specialty, so I believe the answer to be "no". I am looking at fellowships that have many off-service rotations and dedicated didactics to prepare me to be well-rounded EM provider and also in the event I do not want to do EM, I have other experiences. I do have other interest in critical care and hospital medicine. I have shadowed in critical care and enjoyed it. I am trying to find shadowing in hospital medicine. I have not had a rotation in either specialty but EM seems to be what I really like the most. What are your thoughts on this?
Moderator True Anomaly Posted December 20, 2021 Moderator Share Posted December 20, 2021 I think the only thing “wasted” about it is if you’re dead-set on a certain range of salary during your time in residency/fellowship- because most of them will pay you akin to what a physician resident makes per year However, to me, everything else is a benefit, even if you don’t keep doing EM afterwards. It’s all about the journey to finding your ideal career as a PA
MDPDPA22
@True Anomaly That is one thing I have thought about but I'm thinking it will be worth it as you stated. Thank you for your response.
