Other Residencies/Fellowships

Recommended Posts

I have been extensively researching available fellowships/residencies available for PAs/APPs, mostly in Texas since that is the most likely place where I will be living after ?I retire from the Army next year.  After lengthy discussions with my wife/SWMBO it is now less likely that I will pursue one of these, especially if I get job 'offer I cant refuse'. Some may be reposts but some I definitely have not seen on this forum or elsewhere.

TEXAS PA/APP Fellowships/residencies

Dermatology residency in McAllen Texas(Mexican border southernmost tip of TX co-loacted with a DO Derm residency) . Downside: you must agree to work for them for 1 year helping teach the next class after you finish the 1 year program. Upside: MOHS rotation. I know there are very few Derm programs for PAs in the country and its a very sought after specialty.  Due to specialty would be my top choice but  SWMBO is not interested in living in Mexico. http://www.dermresidency.org/?p=72

Mental Health/Psychiatry residency Houston VA: $84K stipend and your prepared/expected to take the Psychiatry CAQ at the end of the year. I spoke with the program director and the VA has hired every graduate they had so far (4).  This is the one Im leaning towards most, Psychiatry interests me and I swear its not only because they get 30/60 minute appointments.  https://www.houston.va.gov/Education/Physician_Assistant_Residency_Mental_Health/Physician_Assistant_Residency_Mental_Health.asp

Geriatric Medicine residency Houston VA: $84K stipend, take care of our old vets and get paid better than any other residency/fellowship I have found. I haven't spoken with this program director but I would assume that they offer jobs to most of their graduates as well.   https://www.houston.va.gov/Education/Physician_Assistant_Residency_Geriatric_Medicine/Physician_Assistant_Residency_Geriatric_Medicine.asp

Capitol Emergency associates PA EM residency Austin TX: 12 month program with offsite rotations/4 weeks EM ultrasound. email program director Kathryn Masters (Kathryn_Masters@teamhealth.com) for a copy of the program guide. (website is under construction/cant be googled but she assured me 2 weeks ago that they are still up and running, 1 resident twice per year)

Greater San Antonio Emergency Physicians advanced Practice Provider EM Fellowship: 12 month program with off site rotations including ICU toxicology and US. According to their website this program was selected by ACEP as the model for EM training for APPs. 300 hours didactic in addition to clinicals. https://www.gsepem.com/gsep-postgraduate-emergency-medicine-advanced-practice-provider-fellowship-program/#1507924231280-119f4aa0-7f99

UT MD Anderson PA Oncology Residency Houston: Very well established, 12 month program with many offsite rotations, many surgical. $75k stipend. https://www.mdanderson.org/education-training/clinical-research-training/clinical-education-for-non-physicians/physician-assistant-program-in-oncology.html

UT Southwestern APP Fellowship Dallas TX: 12 months, new program, not alot fo info.  https://www.utsouthwestern.edu/education/medical-school/departments/emergency/fellowships/app/

UT southwestern Urology PA residency Dallas TX: 12 months, I believe $60k stipend from old post I found (2-3 years aog, may be higher now). https://www.utsouthwestern.edu/education/medical-school/departments/urology/education-training/residency-program/pa-postgrad.html

Texas Children's Hospital PA surgery Fellowship Houston: well established, $65k stipend. https://www.texaschildrens.org/health-professionals/fellowships-and-residencies/surgery-physician-assistant-fellowship

Texas Children's Hospital PA Ortho surgery Fellowship Houston : https://www.texaschildrens.org/departments/orthopedics/texas-children’s-announces-pediatric-orthopedic-surgery-physician-assistant-fellowship

Texas Brain and Spine Institute PA Neurosurgery Residency Bryan Texas (Texas A&M): 12 months. http://www.txbsi.com/education/physician-assistants

Baylor PA EM Fellowship Dallas Tx: 12 months, not highly regarded (unlike the Army program with degree granted by Baylor): 12 months https://www.bcm.edu/departments/emergency-medicine/education/physician-assistant-fellowship

Direct Orthopedic Care Austin Tx: Twice a year runs a 6 month Ortho Fellowship. Not alot of information and only is available when job posting is up for the fellowship, I believe one was up a few weeks ago so may be a few months before its up again. No idea how good the program is but the organizations pays Ortho PAs with 2 years experience $75-90 an hour prn for outpatient work and I think they waive the 2 years if you do their fellowship.  https://directorthocare.com/careers-with-doc/

KENTUCKY

Where SWMBOs family hails from and she's a ginger so Im trying to keep her out of skin cancer proliferating TX.

University of KY PA Neonatalogy residency: first in the nation, only a hand full across the nation. every graduate is working in neonatology (and unlike other patients babies are NEVER A$@h*^#$). If this is something you want to do I think it is damn near impossible to break into without a residency and Lexington is far less expensive than Seattle. https://pediatrics.med.uky.edu/pa-neonatology-residency

University of KY APP EM residency: new, no offsites but seems pretty good otherwise after discussions with program director (ATLS, codes, chest tubes, lumbar punctures, etc.). http://wildcatem.com/app-residency/

Hey Army PA,

Just recently saw this post as I just joined the forum. Curious as to who you heard that the BCM EM Fellowship wasn't highly regarded, just cause I am a graduate of the program? All my colleagues that went onto bigger and better things all were basically guaranteed an EM job afterwords because of the program. The degree isn't really the thing that employers care about it's more about the experience you gain working at a county Level I trauma center in Houston. I hope you find a Fellowship that suits you, but I agree it's hard to take the pay cut for more hours and less money. It's hard when you know you could be making considerably more at the end of the day.

Maybe it has improved but the was one PA here who interviewed for the residency and the Baylor staff told them that ATLS was not nessescary for PAs which tells me where they see PAs.  Also one of the forum members here who has extensive EM experience and covers rural ERs solo mentioned that he met a grad from their program and wasnt impressed. If thats not the case or if there has been improvement then great. I am not sure what I will be doing when I retire and may or may not pursue a refidency/fellowship after the Army. Im hoping to get in with a group that values PAs and has Docs willing to train, I know they exist but not sure how far Im willing to move for one.

Yeah I can only speak from my own experience, but ATLS is a requirement for all of us to work in the ER at the Taub. So that's kind of weird. Just like everywhere there are good providers and bad providers. I can honestly say I feel like the attendings and residents all respect the APPs there and are more then willing to teach (I guess if you are an attending at a teaching hospital and you don't like to teach you're in some real trouble).

But yeah, I hope you find a good group after you get out that uses you as a PA and not an MA. There is still some education needed for some of the docs and surgeons in all specialities about how capable we are at providing high quality healthcare.
