Can HCE ever compensate for a low GPA?

Recommended Posts

I just graduated with approximately a 2.5 GPA. I know I have a long road ahead of me, including re-taking most (if not all) my classes until I get my GPA above a 3.0. But once I get my GPA at/above a 3.0, should I apply then even though it may meet the bare minimum? Is there anything else I should be doing along with my HCE for the next year(s)?

This is what I would be sending in:

- Volunteer EMT-I (3 years) with over 4,000 verifiable hours

- EMT-B Certification (2 years)

- EMT-I Certification (1.5 years)

- Participant in a medical volunteer trip overseas (1 week)

- Shadowed 2 MD's (not really applicable to PA but oh well) (6 months)

- Americorps volunteer (2.5 years)

- Mental health peer internship (1 year)

- Worked as an EMT-B (6 months) for an ambulance company

- Worked as a EMT-B (3 months) for a summer camp)

- Certified AHA CPR Instructor

- Certified AHA ACLS Instructor

- Working (currently) at a hospital as a ICU technician

- Currently shadowing a PA

Long road ahead but you can do it. Similar situation to me, i made it happen.

Apply early, thats huge. When i finally got in it helped that i was the first person interviewed for that year's cycle. Also, do really well on classes that apply to the PA program like Organic, Micro, A&P, ect. It helped that i was able to say "Look, i got all A's in classes that apply to this school so it's not like i dont have the aptitude to handle the subject matter."

I was able to make it happen, i got in with a 3.05 GPA (3.7 science GPA, A's in Organic, Micro, A&P 1 and 2, 3.85 in pre-reqs for the school), a good GRE score, just under 2,000 payed hours HCE as a Mental Health Tech, 2,500 hours payed as an Intake Specialist (promoted, i did patient assessments, Input orders for doctors, ect), 200+ volunteer hours in Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy, 50+ hours shadowing a pain management MD in the OR for spinal surgeries, 25 hours shadowing a PA in General Practice, applied/interviewed twice at the same school.

Hang tough and dont give up. It took me 3 years but when you finally get the acceptance call there's no words.
