Commotio cordis

Recommended Posts

It's usually caused by a blow over the heart from the front, but is it conceivable that it could possibly occur from landing very hard on one's back? What I'm unsure of is if it's usually caused by the sudden compression of the heart during a blunt trauma injury, or if the sudden smacking of the heart against the spinal column could cause it as well without being compressed from both sides. I can't find any documentation that it can be caused from a blow to the back, but I'm still curious as to your thoughts.

I did find some literature that indicated that it could be caused from blunt trauma to the sides/ribs. So based on that I am inclined to guess that it can occur from a blow to the back as well; afterall, the heart sits much closer to the spinal column than it does from the ribs, laterally.
