NHSC 2013 (National Health Service Corps Scholarship)

Recommended Posts

Hello there fellow PA Students. I just wanted to create a thread for the 2013 NHSC (National Health Service Corps) Scholarship applicants so we can keep in touch about hearing back or to answer any questions other students may have. I know the website says we should hear back by September 30th but I spoke with another student in my class who applied as well and she heard somewhere that we COULD hear back as early as July. I know most likely this is not the case but I figured with this thread we could have a better idea of when students start hearing back. Good luck everyone!

I applied as well and am anxiously waiting! I read that in previous years they told people if they were finalists in August and then told those finalists who actually got the award at the end of September. I figure it's going to be a bit of a waiting game so I'm just trying to be patient! Good luck everyone!

I read on a forum on sdn that the number of scholarships is being decreased to 190. Does anyone know if this is true? Also, does anyone know about how many PA students receive the scholarship per year?

I haven't heard anything about 190 or how many of those are designated for PAs. That is a good question though - anyone else know?

Hoping for good news as well. There is no information (public) of the breakdown of who gets the scholarships - MD vs PA, etc... Nor, is there any percentages published for types of career paths. To my knowledge, there is nothing on the Rumor horizon either. To put it bluntly: I realize that patience is a virtue... I'm just short on virtues at the moment.

Good luck to all!

I read in the application packet that there were only 190 scholarships this year as compared to 220 in the past. I am assuming due to budget cuts. I called yesterday since I was having issues logging into my portal (now fixed) and they said they have started reviewing files and that we will be notified anytime between now and September but most likely September. She told me to constantly check my email that they will send out letters (I am guessing to the qualified applicants). I talked to a student who received the award last year and he said he was notified he was a in the finalist in august and received the award in november (that may be when he actually received the money not when he was notified he won).

Hope that helps. I am anxiously awaiting as well!

Hey everyone!! On the same SDN website, they mentioned the NHSC had run a credit report on some of the applicants on 07/03. You can check on annualcreditreport.com through experian.

My credit report was checked on 07/03 by CBC - Primary Health, which is the NHSC. I don't really know if this is an important sign or not, but it is exciting to just see some movement with respect to our applications.

Check your report and lets see who else has the same!

Same here. Hopefully a good sign!

I submitted mine fairly close to the due date, whatever that was (can't recall at the moment).

Thanks for the answers. I submitted mine pretty early so it's probably not looking too good for me. Congratulations if it goes thru!

Who knows? I'm still assuming that I won't be getting it. My mindset the whole time has been that I would have to get pretty lucky to receive the scholarship! But fortunately there is always the loan repayment option, which I hear is less competitive. Definitely my next step if I don't receive the scholarship!

Any updates? Would someone please call the NHSC and ask for an update? I already did and I got someone that was really out of the "loop"

Is everyones application status still "Under Review"? I just logged on to my NHSC account to check. No email, or credit check here.

Mine is still under review as well. I think it's still too early to be jumping to conclusions. I seriously doubt it's all said and done at this point.

I have seen numerous medical, dental and nursing students saying they received emails today announcing that they were finalists. Hopefully they just have not gotten to physician assistants yet...

Hi all! Starting this thread because I see some inquiries for the 2019 cycle being tacked on to the 2018 thread so I thought I'd start a new one. I believe applications for those of us starting our programs this year won't open until March and be due in May, but correct me if I'm wrong.
      Let's do this!!
Signed, NHSC hopeful starting her program in AZ in August 2019

      Hello prospective NHSC scholars!
I noticed the scholarship application has officially opened. Looks like the deadline is May 10th. Just thought I'd get an official thread going so we can all chat about the application process and share any updates any of us may potentially get!
      Fingers crossed, good luck everyone!

      Hey everyone,
I'm in the process of starting my essays for this year's NHSC scholarship and was wondering if anyone had advice on how they approached the essays. My specific questions are highlighted below.
      1) How specific were you in outlining your future career plans for the essay on the NHSC mission? Did you list HPSA sites and/or non-profit organizations you were interested in affiliating with?
      2) How did you approach the essay regarding your commitment to working in primary care? Did you take a narrative approach regarding life events or circumstances that led you to pursue a career in primary care, a philosophical approach rationalizing the importance of primary care, a combination of the two, or something altogether different?
Thanks in advance for any help!

      Hi!
So I'm wondering about this: My program starts in June and I took out the full amount of aid offered (money has been tight and I want to use some of it to catch up). If I am fortunate enough to get the scholarship will this then affect my eligibility for the loan because my cost of attendance will be covered? Will I be able to choose to keep part of the loan or will I have to give it all back? If anybody has experience with this I would love to hear from you.

      Hi all!

Congrats to everyone who was accepted this cycle!!! I received my acceptance in February and have been ecstatic since. Then I remembered that I need to pay for this somehow, loans or scholarship.

I am married and have three children under 5, and my wife stays at home, so it is looking like lots of loans or (fingers crossed/praying) NHSC scholarship. I just finished my NHSC scholarship application and submitted yesterday!

Anyone else apply for the NHSC scholarship?

I know it will be a while before we hear anything, but hopefully we can keep each other updated on our status changes for encouragement.

      Good luck to everyone!
