tcd1976 Posted December 21, 2010 I am looking at ADC, Welch-Allyn, and Riester oto-/ophthalmoscope dianostic sets. Have any of you used more than one of these? Anything you really like? Anything you recommend I avoid? I am trying to put together group pricing for my PA class, and I would like to get the best deal on a piece of equipment that will serve us well without breaking the bank. ADC seems to be least expensive, Riester middle of the pack, and W-A about twice the price or more. Your thoughts and opinions are much appreciated! HAPPY HOLIDAYS! :=D:
MCHAD Posted December 22, 2010 What is this for...school purposes? If so go with the cheapest. chances are you will have diagnostic sets at any future employer and wont need your own except for personal use on family members or mission trips. Just my opinion. If you are going to purchase a nicer one, i say go with the pocket sets by either Reistar or Welch alynn
Moderator EMEDPA Posted December 22, 2010 Moderator WA is the industry standard but any will do. I still have my dad's WA from when he was in medical school in the 60's and it still works great.
medic25 Posted December 22, 2010 We used the WA, and it's top notch. You might want to look into buying them used, or from your upperclassmen, since you'll likely never use it again after graduation. As our class found out, any job you ever have that will need one will most likely have it on every wall. Unless you're doing relief work or you want to look in your own kids ears at home I don't see much reason to spend $4-500 dollars on one.
bradtPA Posted December 22, 2010 Welch-alyn is great, jut avoid the Panoptic option. For students, it's not worth spending the money on it. I also like the guarantee welch-Alyn has on their sets for students; mine broke in clinicals and it was replaced free of charge....
tcd1976 Posted December 23, 2010 Author Yes, this is for school. I think at this point, I am looking at the Riester ri-mini set (2.5V F.O.) because even if I break it and have to replace it, it is less than half the cost of the W-A and I'd still come out ahead. My husband works for another German company who first specialized in optics, otherwise I'd never have looked into Riester. Their guarantee is two years in length, which puts me out of school. As far as quality, my understanding is that Riester would be giving W-A a run for their money in the US if they were better known. Would you say this is fair? I wish I could use my dad's because I grew up using it! Unfortunately, it doesn't meet the requirements.
