hamilton1961 Posted February 5, 2013 I received a phone call from a PA program offering me a position in their program. The admissions coordinator asked whether I would be coming to the program and if so, they would send an acceptance packet. The explanation was that the Graduate Admissions Office prepares the packets and presumably they did not want to prepare a packet if I was not going to accept the seat and attend the program. I have already been accepted to another program which I prefer over this program but I am debating as to whether I should request the acceptance packet anyway. Thoughts?
lancer_dancer01 Posted February 5, 2013 Well if you are already thinking about the other program why hold a seat in the program you don't want to attend. I assume you did an interview on campus and if it didn't seem like a good fit then how will a packet change your mind. I would choose to attend the program you want to and it seems you already did that so give the seat to someone who wants to be there.
sartort Posted February 5, 2013 That's weird that they would do that. Most programs want to send you the info so that you can make an educated decision and give them the deposit. A program wanted to know if there was anything they could do to convince me over the phone but there was no pressure and I had to send a formal letter of acceptance and deposit. If you're thinking something in that packet could influence your decision, tell them to send it. I don't consider it an official offer until I get something in writing myself, but I do think the fact that they are expecting this of you seems a little pushy. This is a big choice for you and you should receive all of the information to make it. You did pay to apply and probably to travel to an interview, so it seems unreasonable that they would be that cheap. The only reason it would make sense is if the program is starting really soon and they need to know who will be in the class.
Just Steve Posted February 6, 2013 Why play games? You are in the other program, you like the other program better..why can't you just say "thank you very much for your offer however I have selected a different school". They will probably ask "what school" as they are curious to their competition. Telling them that answer is totally up to you but I'd personally say, "thanks again, have a good day" without passing on the name.
hamilton1961 Posted February 7, 2013 Author Thanks for the advice. I called them and told them thank you for the offer but I would be attending another program in the Fall.
