rmcnamar30 Posted February 4, 2013 I'm currently a rad tech student. I made the choice to make a career change somewhat late at 36 years old. I'll be finished with my schooling next year, but always have an eye towards the future. I very much enjoy working in Diagnostic Radiology, but know I'll eventually want to expand my scope of practice to either become a RPA or PA. The idea of being a PA is a bit more intriguing to me than committing my entire life to Radiologic Sciences. I have a Bachelors from a previous career in case anyone was wondering. I'm just wondering if I'll be the old geezer in the room if I enter PA school at around 40 years of age.
JoelleK Posted February 4, 2013 Hi there...I started my program at 36 and will graduate at 38. There are several students older than I am in my class. I believe our oldest graduate will be 45 or 46 when we graduate. Good luck in your endeavors!
woodsters Posted February 4, 2013 I was 41 when I started and yes, I was the oldest in my class. There were a few other older students and together we pulled the class avg up to 25 years of age :-)
Hemegroup Posted February 4, 2013 I graduated at 39. I was the second oldest person in my class. Most students were in their mid-20s with a few others in their early to mid 30s. Don't care about what other people think and it doesn't matter if you are the old geezer in the room. The younger students can benefit from your life experience at the very least and you can benefit from their vitality.
Just Steve Posted February 4, 2013 I started at age 38, guy in front of me is 56. Average class age is about 36.
lumina Posted February 4, 2013 I feel like a lot of the schools I looked at this year had statistics on their websites on average age and age range so it might be nice to check out the PA schools' websites to get information on schools that interest you.
Koppma Posted February 4, 2013 I will be starting PA school in September at 29 years old. But I look like I am 18 years old. I got lucky with the Asian genes.
IdahoPA Posted February 5, 2013 Average is 31. Youngest is 26, but she is def the minority. Oldest is 52, I believe. Plenty of students around 40. :)
briepm Posted February 5, 2013 29 when I started - we have several people in their 30's (10?), 2 in their 40's, 2 in their 50's. Yes, you may be one of the oldest but it's not a big deal. One of my favorite classmates just turned 41.
PYRITE Posted February 5, 2013 41-started this year (oldest in my class) but we have several in late 30's; youngest in program is 19;average about 25
NJlovesPA Posted February 5, 2013 41-started this year (oldest in my class) but we have several in late 30's; youngest in program is 19;average about 25 19? holy cow does that person have a bachelor degree?
OpSite Posted February 6, 2013 Started at 41. Will graduate at 44. Oldest in my class. Age is relative. If you believe it, you can achieve it!
PYRITE Posted February 6, 2013 19? holy cow does that person have a bachelor degree? The individual has a bachelor degree, has a couple years of HCE, is very motivated, and very intelligent. I was surprised when I found out the age, I would have guessed closer to 25.
Guest Posted February 6, 2013 Don't be concerned. Plenty of people in their 40s in PA school. In fact some people prefer to be friends with them because they they take school seriously and are very good students (and people!).
Mordechai Posted February 6, 2013 I will be 28 when I begin in sept. My class is about 50% 21-24 and 40% 25-35. The remainder being older and topping out at 50
jts Posted February 6, 2013 Old geezer? Hah! I was in my late 50s when I started PA School...you are truly as young as your mind is. People are so hung up on age. Stop stressing and do what is in your heart.
delco714 Posted February 6, 2013 Started at 20 with bachelor's in psych, graduating in May with MSPA at 23.
caromanowic Posted February 6, 2013 Graduated at 23? Wow, and I was considered the youngest in entering the program at 23. Avg age was about 28, oldest being 47.
fit4235 Posted February 11, 2013 I start PA school this year and right after my 30th bday. All the schools I interviewed with were similar--lots right out of college, lots like me (2nd careerists in mid-late 20s), and then a little bit of folks in mid-late 30s, early 40s. Didn't notice much older than that at my 4 school interviews. Average seems to be mid 20s from my experience. Like others have said before, who cares. Age is just a number and with the advent of good food science, exercise, and plastic surgery who knows how old everyone is nowadays--just kidding :) Passion=Desire=Who Cares About the Details=Go For It!
Joelseff Posted February 12, 2013 Graduated at 37. I was mid pack in age. We had a bunch of 50 somethings, mostly FMGs and 2 chiros, and some old school alpha nurses....they were fun... Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using Tapatalk
jen0508 Posted February 12, 2013 I wouldnt consider 40 as old or unusual for PA school. it is meant to be a second career.
