Looking for some wise advice...

Recommended Posts

hi everyone,

i just started my first job 2 months ago in the ED and absolutely hate it because i honestly feel im underpayed for the amount we do in the ED as PAs. im only getting about 38 an hour. especially getting hit with the terrible flu season, seeing this large volume of patients with the department being understaffed this makes me want to quit even faster. Plus the chances of malpractice worries me everyday. I graduated well in the 5th percentile of my class and feel like i have so much more to offer. im already sending out my resumes to different locations however im afraid that i did it too early within my employment. i havent quit just yet and im looking to do so once i find a better one in hand first. How do i explain myself if the future employer asks me about my current job? and honestly how does anyone find a job that they truly love with great pay? what research should i do before starting a new job that doesnt have this sort of outcome. What sub specialty are you guys doing that you love and can recommend me!! Thank you all for your time.

i do emergency medicine and i love it.......however.. 38 is pretty low for the ED. is that before or after tax? we have been pretty busy too . i just take the patients as they come... if there are 40 people in the waiting room then so be it. dont let it stress you out, just work at a comfortable pace. They can and will wait. I enjoy the variety of EM. we have supportive docs that dont mind teaching. We are also able to see any patient we feel comfortable seeing, so I dont have to see fast track patients all day. You may just not be in the right supportive environment. Or...Emergenecy medicine may not be for you.

The best research you can do is shadowing before you sign a contract. Spend time with the PA's to see what their day is like, as well as getting to know the docs you will be working wtih. I shadowed at 3 places I interviewed at and they didnt mind. It helped alot in making my decision.

Broaden your search radius. I drive 30min- 1hour to work, depending on the hospital. Yea it sucks sometimes, but its only 15 shifts a month and its worth doing a job i enjoy for the pay i want.

I am in a similar situation in that I hate my job after 2 months, except the $$ is good (102K). I honestly just wanted to offer my support. In your case, what Jen said is spot-on. See who you can see in the time you can. You're probably used to being able to do the most as it sounds like you were a good student. Well, this is your life, your career now. These are your decisions. You have to do things in your own time -- you're a new grad. And if they don't understand that, I'm really sorry.

As far as the money, I'm not sure where you are, but that does sound low. The only new ER PA I know around here is paid about 91K ($45ish per hour) at a big hospital. I'm in Michigan.

Good luck to you. If this is something where a new mindset can help (like taking patients as they come, etc), I say stick it out and ask for a raise based on market value. If they're not willing to work with you, I'm sorry and I wish you the best. Good luck.
