Wait-list, what exactly does it mean?

Recommended Posts

So I've been wait listed at my number one choice and I'm not sure exactly what that entails. Am I ranked? Do I have a number assigned to me? Is it by date of placement on the list? Should I just consider this a rejection? Trust me, I'm a very positive thinker and this will not deter me from getting in, however I am not sure how the whole Wait-list thing works...

Some schools rank the list and after all spots have been accepted, they go down the list starting with the first person and offer seats until the class is made. Most schools will give a person who is offered a seat, approx 2wks (varies by program) to accept and pay the deposit. Some schools will combine the waitlisters with the last group of interviewees and send out acceptances. Some may offer seats in something similar to a lottery--depends on the program.
