Prior active duty currently in the reserves and will be applying for the IPAP not this up coming cycle but the next. And one thing my wife and I talked about was potentially going back to active duty to finish out my 20 years. I know that if you go to IPAP as a reservist you have to do 6 years as a reserve PA, but the question is is it possible to go active after that 6 (or even before the 6 are up) and is that process the same with the 369 form?
Any guidance is welcome since we’re serious about it!
Hi, everyone. I’m going to attempt becoming a PA and need some advice. I have a good idea on what I’ll be doing to attempt getting into programs, so I’ll go ahead and give you my estimated credentials when applying to a program, sometime in the next 4 years.
Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Health Sciences from Arizona State University. 3.6 GPA Standard GRE scores (haven’t taken any yet, but to play it safe, I’ll just say I’ve hypothetically scored average or slightly above average) Surgical Technician degree from a local technical college with ~ 2,000 hours clinical experience with ~ 500 hours of volunteer hospital-related work. Seeking to become a Surgical Physician Assistant. My main concern is that I’ll be attending ASU Online. I live in Georgia, so I’m sure the topic will be brought up and if I moved here, took online classes, etc. I’m completely content with online classes and don’t think they’ll harm my chances. I’ve inquired to PA programs near me, and they have all said they accept online programs like I’m pursuing, but that doesn’t let me know if someone would be deemed more competitive if they had similar credentials as me but in a physical campus. For my labs (required for PA program acceptance), I will actually have to fly out of state and attend those in person in an accelerated fashion specifically designed for out of state online students, so I’m still getting that physical lab presence, and it’s from a highly respected university. With all that being said, I currently have a job in aviation with a Fortune 500 company - I know, totally different world. My point is that I make really good money for my age. I’m 24 and made a little over $60,000 last year, which is very good in Georgia. So I don’t want to leave my current job to pursue school in a more traditional sense. I’m actually attending two colleges simultaneously - the local tech college for my Surgical Technician degree and ASU. I’ve just started on my ST program, which will take about 18 months. In this time, I can continue to go to ASU Online, work towards my bachelor’s, and save up as much money as possible from my job. After I complete the ST program, I’ll leave my current job to gain some clinical experience. I’ll have about 2-3 years left for me to finish my bachelors, which will give me plenty of time to rack up those required clinical hours. Sorry to rant, but I just wanted to get everything out there in a single post. Do you guys think I’m on the right track? How do you feel about me getting an online degree from ASU while simultaneously working for clinical experience? Does getting a degree part-time look less competitive than someone who’s going to college full time? How do you feel about my credentials? Answers to any questions are highly appreciated! Is it possible to transfer from one PA school to another? I completed the didactic portion (1 year) but my grades are really suffering from their disorganization and putting my academic status in jeopardy. Will any credits transfer or would I have to start from scratch? Please provide suggestions for well-organized, well-structured PA programs, especially ones that will accept transfers
Reasons for leaving:
-In my program there are too many changes and restructuring going on within the program. The program director and 7 instructors resigned within weeks of each other. (I heard the school is having money issues but we haven't been given a real reason. Everyone has been politically correct with their reasons for leaving.)
- Several classes had multiple teachers cover one class to pick up the slack from the teachers who left. The lectures were super disorganized. No one bothered to take responsibility and review exams before giving it to us. More than 10 times exams were given without being reviewed- (Material was (1) not covered and supposed to be on a future exam, (2) test questions from the old professor but the material was not covered by our current professor (3) poorly written questions. The class as a whole did so bad on one exam, that we had 18 points given back! Another example, the proctor gave us an incorrect test- we waited 45 mins before they told us they couldn't get it straightened out and the correct test was given a week later. Another test not enough time was allotted. We had 20 mins to answer 16 questions using an algorithm where we had to enter information into a website. It was impossible to enter the data that fast. So many students did poorly that we were offered extra credit (which never happens). The extra credit was super lengthy and only allowed for 3 points back. (I would have earned a 100 on the first exam if the proper time was allotted, but ended up with a 75 after getting partial extra credit. (Apparently the same thing happened the previous year and they didn't bother to correct the time issue)
-They tried implementing an IBL (independent based learning) but did not plan the cases through. We also had to do many modules to supplement our knowledge. We were told that the post-test would be based on the modules but the post-test exam had nothing to do with them! It was a complete mess and hurt our grades. Many students complained enough to the point were they removed it completely (we had 6 IBL's left). IBL's were a week long and only counted for 2% of our grade. Why were we spending so much time on something that was not worth much of our grade? My class expressed that it was not preparing us for the PANCE and did not want to be guinea pigs for this project.
-The program is being moved from the Podiatry school to the nursing school because the podiatry school might be having issues with accreditation. I am not sure how this affects anything but it seems to be a big deal.
-In our didactic manual, it says the program offers tutors. The first semester I got a tutor but 2-3 exams had passed before I could get help. It took them a while to get someone set up. The second semester they said we shouldn't need tutors and did not get one. The 3rd semester, I asked for a tutor for 2 classes only for my final exams and was told no tutors were in place.
PA school is expected to be hard but this kind of disorganization doesn't make it any easier. It doesn't feel like they are preparing for the PANCE exam. Worst of all it is putting my academic status in the program in jeopardy and there is really no place to turn for help. I feel like I would thrive in another program that is better organized.
I appreciate any suggestions or advice that is offered.
Hello, I'm a new user on this board and am in a bit of a pickle. I was originally a Pre-Nursing major, but switched my major to biology(pre-pa) before taking the TEAS for Nursing. Marywood University has a 5-year PA program that undergrads can transfer into with the only requirement being a 3.0 GPA. The only catch is that admission into the professional phase (the actual PA program) is competitive, and still requires an interview and possibly even GREs.
I'm in my sophomore year and am a bit behind since I had to switch from Pre-Nursing, but have managed to finish both semesters of general chemistry, and Biology I. I was wondering if it would be worth it to transfer into this program in the Spring semester of my sophomore year and finish Organic I and II over the summer so that a good chunk of my Science pre-requisites will be finished. Any current transfer students at Marywood are welcome to chime in as well.
Also, how many of you guys in the Pre-PA track were accepted into the professional phase? What was your GPA and HCE?
Hi, I was hoping someone could aid me in the process of transferring into a BS/MS program as a transfer student. I am 28 years old with immense healthcare experience and would like some security with my choice. If I were to finish my bachelors in the sciences, the thing I fear the most is ending up on a waiting list. However, if I transfer into a BS/MS program, I may stand a better chance. I'm at a very tough point.
If anyone has any ideas or guidance whatsoever .. I would more than appreciate it.
