wonk
Anybody have any experience working at a free clinic (primary care) on a volunteer basis? I'm considering putting in 1-2 weekend days a month and wanted to know if I can get anything out of it other than the sheer joy of helping those in need =) Is it worth my time or should I just stick to reading books? I'm a new grad and about 2 months into my first job in internal medicine. Anyone hear of any tax breaks for volunteer work?
MedicinePower
As far as I understand the IRS doesn't care about your time but they do care about anything you spend, such as gas and supplies. They seem to like mapquest for mileage calculations.
Moderator EMEDPA Posted October 14, 2012 Moderator Share Posted October 14, 2012 you probably won't get a tax break for working a free clinic unless you work there > 20 hrs/week. in my state if you work in a health provider shortage area as your primary job you get a 5000 dollar tax credit. I have volunteered at a free clinic a few times/mo for the last 9 years. it saves folks money and keeps them out of the er so I think it is time well spent.
