New Grad: How much time is reasonable to consider a job offer?

Recommended Posts

I am a new grad applying to PA positions for the first time.  There are two positions I applied for, both of which I am very, very interested in.  I recently conducted an on-site interview for position A and in the process of making travel arrangements for an on-site interview for position B.  I am hoping to visit position B within the next 3 weeks.  Position would like to meet to discuss an offer at the end of the week (yay!), but I would still like to complete the on-site visit for position B before making a final decision to ensure my choice reflects the best fit.

How much time is reasonable to take to consider a job offer?  I want to approach this professionally, and make sure I am responding in a respectful and timely manner, but I would really like to complete the on-site interview for position B before I make a final choice.

For context, both positions involve relocating to new parts of the country and I am also considering my partner’s career prospects in both locations.

Thank you for your input!

Had a similar situation play out. You can try to ask position A now for a month to decide, but I would be surprised if they’re cool with that. More reasonable may be to ask for a couple of weeks and then accept the position A offer. If you get an offer from position B and renege on A they may not be very far along in the credentialing process anyway. Don’t apply for a license in the state of position A until you’ve heard back from B. Best of luck.

Thank you for your input.  I suppose I am not entirely clear on the difference between an offer letter and a contract and how long negotiations typically take, as well as how long is reasonable to ask a lawyer to review a formal contract before signing.  Thanks again!
