Cw8887
Hi, I am recently a new grad and just received an offer in pain management. It'll be 5 days a week, no call, no holidays. The offer was $63,000. To me that seems very low. I'm not sure if they do this expecting you to negotiate higher? I really need and would like this job, but I feel it should start higher. Any suggestions on negotiation? Thank you!

Moderator EMEDPA Posted September 18, 2012 Moderator Share Posted September 18, 2012 Don't take less than 70-75k. I made that at my first job almost 2 decades ago....
Cw8887
I'm in Pennsylvania. It's my understanding that Pa is on the lower end for salarie, but that just seemed very very low.
primadonna22274
PA is definitely on the low side, but that is very, very low.

Purrpa
Hi, I am recently a new grad and just received an offer in pain management. It'll be 5 days a week, no call, no holidays. The offer was $63,000. To me that seems very low. I'm not sure if they do this expecting you to negotiate higher? I really need and would like this job, but I feel it should start higher. Any suggestions on negotiation? Thank you! IMO, yes,'they' expect you to negotiate. It's reasonable & expected to respond with something like, "Thank you. I am really impressed with your practice & agree I am a good fit....etc., however, with my experience as an MA (RN, x-ray tech, etc.) I was looking at a salary of $85 - 90K/yr." (Go High - expect a counter offer somewhere at the low end of the range). That said, if you really need and would like this job....then you may want to evaluate their come-back offer carefully. Perhaps they are willing to re-evaluate your performance in 3 -6mos? The 1st job as a PA is very important. You may want to consider this as an internship of sorts. Get experience & shine. Take every oportunity to learn - everything, including, how you can make your boss' life easier. Take notes & make sure you remind him/her of this at 3, 6, 12 mos intervals. Twenty yrs ago I started my PA career at a wage of 42K, however, my 1st SP taught me things I use to this day - including how to negotiate my worth (BTW, he GAVE me bonuses almost double my salary at the end of my 1st yr - without me asking - imagine that!!) He once told me I was worth more than 6 x my salary, & several yrs ago I exceeded that salary (in surg & dermatology). I wish you all the best!
