One may be an excellent clinician but a horrible leader. Command leadership positions in the military have people with multiple backgrounds. Some are nurses, physicians and some went to officer candidate school from enlisted positions such as hospital corpsman. The clinical background isn't as important to the military as the command and organizational leadership skills. I've seen the same in the civilian sector with top notch surgeons as chief executive officers that suck as leaders. One should stick with what they do best.
