Hope2PA Posted June 12, 2022 Why is the president of PAFT, the group supposedly looking to PA future, employing NP over PA? PAFT caved on title and their president chooses to employee 16 NP, 5 PA and 1 physician. Obviously because of $$$$, but if her pocket is more important than the profession she is suppose to be supporting??? Am I missing something? she is also lives in NC, they next likely state to fall to NP independence. At least she has a business that will keep her financially stable. Quote
Administrator rev ronin Posted June 12, 2022 Administrator So, Kris Pyles-Sweet is the immediate past president of PAFT. I don't know that she reads here often. I don't speak for her, but as part of my DMSc coursework, I just modeled how much it would benefit me to have my job done by a physician, me, or an NP. An NP was substantially more profitable to employ, not only because they're cheaper, but also because they get reimbursed by my state's workers comp system better than PA's do. The difference, after paying each provider a prevailing wage was a wash between a PA and a physician, but the NP would make the practice $3000/month more as a 1.0 FTE. Now, I'm guessing Kris doesn't make THAT much more per NP, but I'm also not sure how much of that money she's pouring back into PA advocacy. All of this assumes your numbers are accurate, of course, which I have no direct knowledge of. Quote
KpsPac Posted June 12, 2022 Hi, Hope2PA. Feel free to ask me any questions about owning a medical practice. PAs are realizing we can be in charge of own destiny by caring for patients in places where physicians care not to travel. We also realize there are many facets to not only owning a business, but a medical practice. I will be happy to discuss any part of my practice and answer any questions once you have your facts straight. With that being said, I will ask you the same questions I ask everyone: Are you a member of your state org? Do you donate to your PAC? Are you involved in any committees? Have you participated in your state’s PA legislative day? Do you belong to the AAPA? Do you donate to the PAC? Have you attended the LAS? Walked Capital Hill with your colleagues? 1 Quote
iconic Posted June 13, 2022 (edited) There's another PA practice owner that I know of who employs an NP, I presume, because they don't have to find an SP for them to supervise. When I was looking for jobs, I had an NP who wanted to hire me but she didn't have an SP to supervise.. Edited June 13, 2022 by iconic Quote
Cideous Posted June 14, 2022 I recently had the opportunity to do some investigative work in a state where NP's have full autonomy. The difference in these practices was STUNNING vs Texas. Hundreds of NP ONLY practices. I mean no PA's and no docs. Everything started and stopped with them. The DNP's referred to themselves at doctors. All completely legal and in this state....now the norm. Spending most of my time in Texas I could not believe the difference. If this is what is going to happen in Texas when NP's get autonomy here.....oh lordy it's going to be UGLY on the job market for supervision dependent PA's. 2 Quote

I am not a PA, but a lowly patient, family of patient and allied health professional who has had first hand experience from poorly educated NPs. In my NP independent state, you can quite often either be seen by NP or not be seen at all. All professions have good and bad eggs, but as of past 10 yeas NP have really dropped the ball with quality. PAs have handed care over by being really poor in professional progress legislatively. PAs are often ignorant, don’t care about what’s happening as long as they have a job, or have given up on caring and just hope to make it out alive. If a leader really cared about their profession, give up a few bucks and support your profession. What have I done, well I have personally called legislators, governor , mailed over 100 letters in support of PA improvement legislatively. I have been in meetings where the nurse managers put down PA profession as being little more than medical assistant. Also meetings with physicians who will support PAs only to get substantial extra pay, if no extra pay, they want NP because they aren’t responsible for any supervision. Sadly medicine is not about quality care, it’s about how to make most money. I’m stuck, if I can’t have Physicians, I’d at least like option of the most qualified APP, my current PCP physician is past retirement age, the clinic/hospital system is now predominantly NP in primary and ob/gyn, so I care, but have nearly given up and will do all I can to remain healthy, as PAs have been doing their best to kill their own profession. Even the quality of medical experience for entry PA students have decreased, though still far superior to poor quality of new NP. Quote
NeoTrion Posted June 26, 2022 I think in this case it shows that the point of view looks far different depending on where you sit at the table. With respect Kris the question is valid and deserves an answer, but at the same time this could have been asked differently and in a more diplomatic way. I would personally like to hear the answer but no matter what I get I am not looking for a gotcha moment. I would honestly like to hear the answer from a business owners perspective. Hope2PA while your question is valid, a point has been made by Kris. I appreciate you reaching out to state orgs and such. While Kris and I are not acquainted in real life, we have conversed multiple times on this and other forums. She has given me advice and her perspective on multiple issues both in Texas and North Carolina. Lets hear the answer as a business owner and not have a gotcha moment here. 1 Quote
