DPT interested in switching over to PA

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a doctorate in physical therapy and I have been practicing for the past 2 years. I have been working for one of the most revered hospitals in the state of Texas, and I am working on an orthopedic fellowship. I like PT ok, but honestly I feel like a factory worker. I don’t feel like a valued and respected  clinician. I cannot see me doing ONLY this for the rest of my career. I was thinking about PA school to further my education and open my world to treating  more body systems than just muscle and nerves. I cannot prescribe meds or order imaging as a PT so my services are limited! I still need to take pre-reqs such as Genetics and O-Chems. My science GPA wasn’t “awesome” . I got a “C” in physics II (which was not required for my PT program) and Chem II which was a long time ago in undergrad.Should I go back and take those as well? Everything else was A’s and B’s What do you think my chances are of getting into a program? Do you think I will have to take any pre-reqs?  Talk to me..

I would definitely say go back and at least take some continue education courses on the classes that you feel you may need to brush up on. Most community colleges offer them either free of charge or for very little. I think your background of medicine would make you an extremely strong applicant, so if you think you are wanting to switch I would say go for it. See if you can shadow a PA to get a better perspective because who knows, maybe you want something with a little more reach like a M.D.. Either way, I say brush up on your classes but go ahead and throw applications in. What is the worst thing that can happen?
