New Grad ED Offer

Recommended Posts

Hi guys! I just got extended my first offer a position for an ED outside of Chicago burbs for 65$/hour. Training is for 3 months (6 weeks with physician and then 6 with an APP). 4 weeks PTO, good HC plan, and up to 6% 401k matching. Should I negotiate a higher hourly rate? I was not sure if new grads were “established” enough to do that.

Thanks so much!

That's a good offer for a new grad w/o residency. Not every place offers PTO. 3 months of one on one training is good. No matter what you did prior to becoming a PA (Healthcare experience wise) you will be humbled. You probably could ask for a 5k-10k sign on bonus but those typically come with wording in the contract that you stay 1-3 yrs or your responsible to pay it back.

Sounds like a fair offer for a new grad.  Get your experience, show you are worth it..... Then ask for more money later.  In the past in the Chicagoland area it was hard to get into ER without experience.  So I think it is a fair offer to learn, you probably can make more after 1-3 years experience if you hop jobs.

Don't get greedy; $65/hr is a great starting point for EM with no prior APP experience whatsoever. If your offer includes CME, RVUs, etc. then you're in a good spot. If it doesn't, that's when you start a conversation.
