jdant
Hi all, I know that there are several posters that work at the VA on this forum so I figured that someone might know. I currently have a DEA license that will expire at the end of June at my current job, I will be leaving this job for a new job at the VA in July. When you work for the federal government do you need a personal DEA license? I thought that I had heard that you could use a federal facility DEA license? Also, I am assuming that I should keep my state licensure active, correct. Thanks for the info. sas5814
You have to have an active license from any state to work at the VA. You don't have to have a personal DEA but I'd keep one anyway. I have heard , but don't know, there is a way to apply for a DEA and say you work for the fed and you won't get charged. Sadly I ponied up my $888 just before I was hired by the VA. Mayamom
When I worked for the state prison the DEA fee was waived. But if it expires in June you may have to reapply in July when you start your new employment. Not sure what that involves. Call the DEA. I have in the past and they have been helpful. Reality Check 2
DEA is free if you work for the govt AND only work inside the govt. If you moonlight anywhere else - you have to have a paid DEA and VA will not pay for it. When you go to renew - you can choose Govt Employee and enter your Govt email, etc. It is very nice - saves a lot of money. You do renewals on their website - it is painful if you don't know exact dates, etc. I think I had to list a VA supervisor or something so they could confirm I was real. It is likely that I will renew my DEA license at my current employer a month prior to starting with the VA. I am wondering if the VA will just accept that license or whether I will have to go through some other steps. I was told that moonlighting at other jobs when employed by the VA might require a review and formal approval from VA leadership, what has your experience been with regard to moonlighting. Thanks for the replies everyone.

In other words if you have a license and then get a new job and then have to request that DEA licensing folks make the change to a new practice location? Reality Check 2
The VA will take your DEA at the time of employment, and you will have to pay for it. At renewal, it will be zero dollars unless you want to moonlight. I do not moonlight — no time. I don’t know much about the process of moonlighting with the VA. You have to have a valid license in ANY US state for the VA - does Not have to be the state you are in. The VA is federal. https://www.va.gov/vapubs/viewPublication.asp?Pub_ID=1139&FType=2 You can look up VA directives about PAs and requirements, such as above. They are public documents. Ask a lot of questions
doubledose
Can't speak for VA specifically but can for Active Duty (AD). AD DEA is covered for federal employees and beneficiaries (retired, AD, dependents, GS, etc... if covered by some form of Tricare). Credentialing submits for you and emails you the license. If you moonlight or try to use the DEA outside facility or for non-beneficiaries than DEA is not applicable, you will need to pay for another DEA. To my understanding it is required for us to submit request for moonlighting. Hope that helps.
