Another federal win.

Recommended Posts

Lots of discussion on this among the VA PAs. basically it lifts the caps on salaries for everyone but will mostly give a boost to PAs in high COL areas who couldn't practically be paid enough for pay parity with their peers in low COL areas. It will give the folks already in place a boost and improve recruiting for PAs in the VA.

Its the end point of 5 years of work by VAAPA and AAPA.

This is great!! Now if the VAPA's would actively and consistently lobby for their VA's to open all positions to PA's, even better.  Unfortunately some VA's regularly post positions for NP and omit PA. Look into your local hiring practice.  The one locally for me has not posted PA in going on 2 years but have multiple NP and when PA attempted to apply they were told nope, only NP.  After complaints, there is supposed to be an investigation.   PA's at the location had no clue what was going on.

I have tried for 13 years to get hired by local VA clinic

As a disabled Vet USAF AD I figured it would be a shoe in

Nope - stupid politics and back door favors and an HR department that would not know a good applicant if they ran into it with their car.   prevents good hiring.  Instead they have consistently hired from out of the area, or new grads and with in 1-2 years THEY ALL QUIT.  It confuses my how they can be so disconnected from reality....

Local VA just opened a super clinic and needed more staff (still does I think). Advertised ofr NPs only. I wrote to the med dir who didn't bother to reply.

Call patient advocates at the hospital. Explain similarities and differences between PA and NP. Don’t be shy, provide  education, PAs typically do have better education and clinical experience, and fact that PAs originally medics and military PAs excluded. Explain that they are there to advocate for patients quality of care. They, patient advocates, are the ones that finally got an investigation going for me. I did  throughly lay out education requirements and CEU requirements for each and flat out said the hospital was actively only hiring the provider with least education and experience, is this best care for our veterans? I was polite and said there are NPs that may be better qualified than PA, but they are not trying to find most qualified. The job of patient advocate is to advocate for best quality of care for our veterans.

... Thus ensuring job security for the HR folks involved.  When a system looks broken, always ask "Who benefits?"

HR doesn’t really have control on how job is posted. It comes from manager, quite often nurse managers. They, HR, just put in job postings as told and kicks out anyone not on list. If manager doesn’t put PA on list of acceptable applications then you are kicked out.

I have done all that.
many times NP posting decided my nursing manager.  Nope will not consider PA.

Professional nepotism! Should be illegal! Guarantee nurses would be filing some sort of suit if tables were turned. PA's are to good for their own good!

Have you heard any update about when these raises will actually begin? Seems like nothing is happening.
