Midori
I know med students do rotations at all hours and work brutal lengths of time. Do PA students do this?
UGoLong
Some perhaps, but not generally from what I've seen. Lots of early morning rounding before surgical cases as I recall.
qcheedude86
Depends what rotations are set up for your program. During my general surgery rotation, we had 1 weekly 24 hour shift in the hospital. It can be brutal but definitely a great learning experience.

CXPAC
It depends on what rotations you are doing. You can be working second shifts or overnight shifts for your ER rotation. You can be working really early in the morning for surgery rotations. They are rotation-dependent.
ANESMCR
Yes and no. You will definitely have several night shifts or shifts lasting into the early morning hours in either EM or surgery. But you probably won’t be assigned a consistent night shift for weeks on end. Edited July 14, 2021 by ANESMCR
MediMike
I had a trauma surgery rotation where I was in house ~14 hours/day on day shift, 6 days/week for 3 weeks followed by 14 hour night shifts 6 days/week for 2 weeks. When I have PA students they work my exclusively night shift schedule...and then some others that I throw them into as well. Definitely rotation dependent.
ohiovolffemtp
During PA school, my EM rotations did require nights/weekends, but no overnight, usually afternoon until 01:00 or 02:00 (usually by then the ED was getting quieter). When I take students, they work my hours, which includes nights, but I try to cut them loose by 02:00 or so unless there are good learning opportunities to be had.
