Medstudent95
You guys the attrition rate here is crazy. We lost 5 students in a month and I heard they lose more students in the fall. If you guys get accepted elsewhere please don’t turn it down to come here. The program also does nothing to make you feel supported or come up with a plan to help you succeed. They will watch you fail out of the program. https://www.thepalife.com/best-pa-schools/ Edited July 31, 2021 by Sweet93
cmac11019
@Sweet93 Your post is completely inaccurate. They did not watch any of us "fail out" and in fact all professors and advisors met with those that were struggling. At the end of the semester the program held "remediation" exam retakes to replace a test you did poorly on. You left the program too early to experience the remediation exam. This program is completely supportive. Also, all lectures are recorded and posted on blackboard for you to re-listen to at your own convenience. If anyone has any questions about this program, feel free to reach out. Edited August 11, 2021 by cmac11019
Medstudent95
So I just found out 6 more students failed the summer semester and they don't know if they will be moving on to the next semester or coming back next year. I will let you guys know if any resolution comes up for the students. Edited September 3, 2021 by Medstudent95
BrewDarrymore
*Recent grad* Hi everyone, I am a recent grad of Mercy College PA program. I have to agree with a mix of the comments above. The school is not doing so well, and although there are a few faculty members who want things to change and will do their best to help you, the program is broken from the top down. The administrative positions need a complete over-haul before things begin to improve here. The directors tend to micro-manage everything without addressing the major issues of the program. They've also had a tough loss of a few faculty members, and without a full staff they are scrambling a bit. The school itself isn't bad, they have great access to clinical sites because of the location and they have a wonderful philosophy of helping out all communities, local and global (the medical mission was canceled the past 2 years due to COVID). ALSO beware: for admission, they seem to focus more on clinical experience than your grades, but this has been causing a lot of issues lately as more and more students are failing out in the first semester. It seems the GPA criteria for admission has gotten a lot looser. *Please be aware that this is purely based on my individual perspective. For example: the 2 toughest classes in the first semester (pathophys and anatomy) have ALWAYS been the toughest courses, but the fail rate for these courses have significantly risen, despite being taught by the same professor. They also have had poor PANCE rates lately, partially because there have been students that were barely passing but allowed to graduate, so when they got to the PANCE, they couldn't pass. With low pass rates, competitive applicants are likely deterred from applying, so Mercy then has an applicant pool made of people with lower GPAs. ALL these stats are related! I really think Mercy has a solid foundation and will flourish again with some new staffing. And, of course, you're going to have to work your ass off, day in and day out. As much as it is their duty to present you with the information that you need to graduate, YOU have to discover the best way to study, to listen to lectures, to follow along, and to keep up. If you cannot do this at one program, it is likely you will not be able to at another. Having additional tutoring or help from your school is definitely necessary (which Mercy lacks), but you really have to know how to pull it together on your own, which is one of the things that makes PA school so difficult - you're kind of on your own. Personally, I think you should be allowed to fail out if the additional help or remediation didn't change your grades. I don't want to have a medical provider who was allowed to retake all of their exams just to get through school - tough perspective, I know. ALL OF THIS BEING SAID, it is very possible to succeed in this program. There were times I didn't think I'd make it, but I graduated with overall great grades and had a job offer before I even took the PANCE. Good luck! cmac11019
@Medstudent95, formerly Sweet93- No discrimination took place. I was in the remediation group and I'll break down the statistics for you (and for everyone who is reading this). The statistics of the remediation group follows: 1) If you do not count Jewish as a minority: 2/3 (66.6%) of the remediation group were minorities 2) If you count Jewish as a minority: 3/4 (75%) of the remediation group were minorities 11 students were in the remediation group. Students that did not continue was because they failed the remediation exam or they needed above a 100 on the remediation exam to pass that course. You were in the group so you heard one student ask, "Can you replace the lowest grade with the remediation exam AND drop the lowest test grade." To put simply, dismissal from the program was the consequence of the student's test performance. The program is hard, the tests are hard, but some students (of all races) had exceptional performance on the exams (i.e., above 100). It wasn't because of the student's race, it was because they figured out the best way to study and master the material. Lastly, the remediation was a gift to us. Technically, all of us should have been dismissed. I'm sorry you didn't get the grade you needed, but don't confuse your performance with racial discrimination of the program. That's not fair. cmac11019
@Medstudent95 You were specifically dismissed from the program because you did not achieve the remediation test grade(s) you needed to either pass the course(s) or pass the semester with the required 2.7 GPA. 7 of the 12 students from the remediation group moved on to the fall semester. Only 2 of the 7 that moved on to the fall semester are not minorities. Again, I'm sorry you did not achieve the test scores required to move on in the program but please don't confuse your personal test performance and your dismissal from the program with racial discrimination of the program. That is completely unfair. Additionally, just because you didn't meet the specific requirements for the program doesn't mean all 12 of us had to be dismissed too. There were clear expectations that were given to us that you just simply fell short on. It had nothing to do with race.

LnPhA
I think just through CASPA. I would imagine any other admissions details would be handled after you accept a seat.
