Is non-clinical volunteering required or recommended?

Is non-clinical volunteering/ community service required or recommended to gain admission at certain schools? Is there a number of hours to aim for?

Schools differ on what they want. Community service never hurts anywhere, and most of my peers had *some* sort of community service noted in their applications. International experience was another big thing that everyone in my class seems to have gotten at one point or another.
