Phlebotomy as HCE?

Recommended Posts

I have a question. How do schools view phlebotomy compared to other hce? I'm asking because I would like to stay at my job because they work great around my school schedule but I'm worried that my experience wouldn't count for much. I will have had 4-5 years of phlebotomy experience by the time I apply. I'm just curious as to whether or not I need to find a better job that would give me more direct patient experience. All opinions are welcomed!

In California it's accepted as long as you're doing blood draws and not just keying orders. The key point being direct patient contact. As this is a national license you're scope of practice will vary state to state to include POCT and vitals. Make sure schools that you apply to know that you had direct patient contact and to what level scope of practice you had.

Definitely check out the schools you are interested in, most have a web page dedicated to how they view HCE. I believe at

AACC phlebotomy is considered middle tier. If they do not have a web page then I would call the program and ask them but

do not call until you have thoroughly checked their website.

Can you please elaborate on the 3-tier system?

low: phleb, emt-basic, cna, most low level techs requiring less than 150 hrs of training

mid: medical asst., lpn, emt-Intermediate, physical therapy asst., etc, positions requiring 500-1500 hrs of training

high: RN, paramedic, resp. therapist, exercise physiologist, foreign medical grad md, etc most professional health care careers requiring 1 yr or more of training

Most schools will accept you with phlebotomy experience. I got in just having ER scribing experience (although I have been an ER tech for 5 months now after my interview, but it was not counted for the school). I also know several other scribes who got into good schools. Phlebotomy beats scribing on pt contact level so you should have absolutely no problems at most places! Just think of all those kids in your future classes who have no idea how to stick someone!
