ssammyy
If you had to choose 2 elective rotations out of these 3 options (Cardiothoracic Surgery, ICU, or Orthopedic Trauma), which would you chose and why?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
greenmood
What do you like? I would chose ICU for sure, you will learn a ton that is widely applicable no matter what specialty you end up working. The other two are a toss up for me. I did one in Hospital Medicine and one in Infectious Disease.
Moderator EMEDPA Posted July 5, 2020 Moderator Share Posted July 5, 2020 ICU, ortho trauma. Unless you want to learn CT surgery to work in CT surgery it doesn't apply much to other fields. ICU makes sense for anyone wanting to work in a hospital setting and ortho works for EM, ortho, primary care, etc
fishbum
ICU for sure. Most of critical care is just internal medicine, but happens to be at the extreme end. All of those skills are useful in most any field (and on the PANCE). Learning about pressors and vents reinforces a lot of physiology/pathophysiology. If you play your cards right, you can get tubes and lines, too. If you're around for more than 15 minutes or so, you'll also get to be part of some end-of-life discussions--an excellent way to practice relating to patients and families.
