Deciding on if I should apply this cycle or wait

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! First off, good luck to everyone applying this cycle.

I've been out of undergrad for about a year and a half now. I'm 27 and have been taking classes and working on my app. As it stands right now, my cGPA is ~3.15 and sGPA ~3.05. I know this is low but I've been in college for a while and have close to 200 credits and am banking on the last 30 to 60 GPA PA programs to get an interview invite.

My HCE experience is ~7000 hours as a dietary aide with some supervising duties and, depending on the program, a licensed Pharmacy Technician ~2500 hours.

PCE ~ 500 hours as an EMT, but could be more if Pharmacy Tech is included.

For volunteering I have about 250 hours doing various events, most notably at the VA hospital helping the research team gather people for a study on communication with providers.

Leadership: As mentioned I worked a supervisor role as a diet aide and I held a treasurer position at my community college on a Pre-med club.

GRE: Have yet to take (should take this summer)

LOR: One from boss of dietary aide

         One from Pharmacy manager

One from Anatomy Professor who is also an MD

         One from Gen Chem Professor

I have not shadowed yet. I was planning on doing that this spring/summer but given the current situation that has been put on hold.

Academically, with the amount of credits I've taken improving my overall gpa or sGPA will take a long time. My current last 30 GPA is looking like 3.6

I have retaken the classes like Orgo 1 (D first time A retake), and BIO 2(F, B) and am currently retaking GenChem 1(B-, hopefully A) and A&P(C+ and B- respectively, now A&P 1:A, A&P2: looking like an A)

I have a C+ in cell bio and Orgo 2 and a C in Physics 1 still not retaken but aren't necessarily pre-reqs, so I'm not sure I will retake them.

Just looking for tips on if I should apply or work on the app and apply next cycle?

Hello,

I think you are a pretty strong candidate already and you should apply this year.

3.6 GPA for the last 30 is great and you have some really good experience.

Even if you don't get in this year, and do your shadowing next year it will only make you a stronger candidate. A lot of times repeat candidates have better odds and shows your serious about their program.

Best of luck!

Justin
