Should I retake the GRE?

Recommended Posts

I recently took the GRE and got a composite score of 306. Quant: 149 and Verbal: 157.

I know having above a 300 score is good, but I'm not sure if schools care more about my individual scores or my composite score? I did much worse on the quant than I expected and don't know if its worth retaking if schools will either way only look at my composite score. I'm worried that if i retake it, ill drop my verbal score and only slightly increase my quantitative score, so ill end up with a similar composite score. What do you recommend?

I don't think your quant and verbal scores are that far apart for you to be worried. From my experience, schools only really focus on the comprehensive score. If they're going to scrutinize a score, I think it would the writing score. If it puts your mind at ease a bit I got a 296 and was also considering retaking it but decided not to (hate standardized tests lol) and I got into my top program. That being said, I wouldn't worry about it. If anything, you can focus on improving the other parts of your application (shadowing hours, PCE hours etc.) to outshine the 300 even though it's a good score. I would also look at the GRE scores required/advised by the programs you're trying to get into and seeing how yours matches up before you make a final decision. Good luck!
