Am I missing something

Recommended Posts

Hey All!

Been working in Orthopedics for 5 months (second job after career switch from different specialty). I am entirely clinical and have not been to the OR (work at a large teaching hospital and residents get OR time whereas the PA's are all pre- and post- op in the clinic). Do many ortho PA's remain on the clinical side? How different is private practice vs. academic hospital vs. community hospital for ortho PA's?

Thanks!

 Do you mean outpatient?

In my experience with 3 Ortho departments (1 private, 2 large community based systems) it is highly variable. I've never worked with residents in Ortho but I would not expect a lot of OR time with residents crawling all over the place. Maybe as a 2nd assist with total joints. If you are looking for OR time or autonomy then academic medicine might not be the place for you.

I've seen PAs as strictly in-patient and trictly out-patient, but I would say the majority get at least 1 day aweek in the OR.

So I'm guessing you don't have to round or do consults?

I don’t round, take call, or see consults. The gig is decent enough but I guess just because I see some acuity doesn’t mean I am anything but an outpatient Ortho PA at an academic hospital.

I think you hit the nail on a head that I was starting to suspect...academic medicine is not for me. Appreciate your reply.
