Doubts on choosing PA in case you move somewhere with no PA profession?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Have you ever have doubts choosing the PA path, with the "what if I move to a country that doesn't recognize this profession"? In my case, I've been in the US for 13 years, married, with kids and my home country has never heard of PAs. I don't really have intentions of moving back, but there's always the what if? Not strong enough to change my mind, but kind of lurking there. Anyone with similar thoughts?

Yes, I've often wanted to move to Germany. I studied abroad there and it felt more like home than anywhere I've ever lived. While the PA profession is present there, it is not prominent yet, so I feel I am stuck in the US for now. The UK has physician associates, but the pay is much lower than in the US. With loans in repayment, taking one-half to two-thirds of a salary cut is not optional.

Sigh.

Hopefully we will one day have more of an international presence.

Can PA's do a residency in another country? And would they be able to practice their certification in that country, should they decide to move to that country??

I’m a prospective PA students currently attending school interviews. For interviews, I’m trying to come up with a substantive presentation for how I see my career playing out, but I’m a little fuzzy on what is available to PAs in the fields of expedition medicine, travel (international) medicine, and mountain medicine. I’ve read up a bit on various sites including Wilderness Medical Society (read up on their Fellowship of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine), worldextrememedicine.com, adventuremedic.com, and opportunity-posting sites like medicalmissions.org. The problems I’ve been running into is that these sites are thorough in their descriptions of certs offered, but even international or expedition job posting sites are not clear about which opportunities are available to PA’s. As a result, I know how I can be certified, but I don’t know what I can do with it. PA’s in these fields- what have you done with your certs?

      Hey all --
New to the forum. I'm a post-BA student with a degree in Geography/Economics, where I focused on community development and the more sociological side of things... Years after my graduation, I decided to take the plunge into the medical field instead. I currently am an EMS worker with the goal to be involved with the Global Health field in the future (main interest in water/sanitation/infectious diseases, etc.).. Given the short background, my thought process is directed at doing a P.A. program with the hopes of being able to utilize that both domestically and abroad...
SO -- I suppose my main questions are:
1.) Does this seem like a good approach, given my main interest being in global health? I'm currently 29 -- so to try and backtrack at this point and attempt to go to Med School seems like an idea I'm being nudged away from... especially from physicians I've met en route at hospitals and others that I know.
Additionally -- I'm wondering if there are any sorts of databases that show P.A. programs with International Clinical Elective rotations? Going from site to site to try and find my best case scenario is becoming somewhat wasteful in terms of time utilization it seems. OR -- better yet, have you heard of any programs that seem to offer this opportunity and/or are the best types of programs for this interest?
May seem like a pretty broad and rounded question, but thought maybe you all could offer some insight. Thanks a ton!

      Hi all :)
I'm currently about to attend PA School and the excitement I have is beyond words. However I have a bit of a problem I was hoping someone could help me with as it seems I can't find a concrete answer anywhere online.
I live in the US and am a US citizen  (have been all my life) however once I finish PA School, I will be moving to Dubai because that is where my Fiancé lives and works. It would be extremely difficult for him to come here and find a job, but over there he is doing very well.
I was just wondering if anyone knew about the certified physician assistant job market in Dubai. Will I be able to find a job? Will I be getting a decent salary? (I'm aware it won't be as much as if I had experience.)
Any information that anyone might have that relates to this would be DEEPLY appreciated

Thank you so much in advance,
      Best,
      Mariam

Hi, I recently began researching into this but am I able to go to an international PA program and then work as a PA in the United States? Is there a specific test that I would need to take or are there any US accredited international schools that I can go to and then return to the US without taking the test?
      Please let me know!
