VA HPSP 2020

Recommended Posts

Hey all! I submitted my application April 9th, was referred on April 28th, and today I received an email stating I’m in alternate status.

Do any of you think funding could be a major reason of not being accepted? I can’t help but wonder if I wasn’t accepted because my PA program is a total of 30 months (longer than most). And it’s quite costly... 🥺

They are federally required (their words, not mine) to give preference to second year students over first.  So if you applied for the whole 30 months and are just starting school, that could be why. And I assume it’s relative to funding.

alternate isn’t a rejection. So maybe it will still happen for you.

I am a PA student starting in August (a 24 month program at a private catholic university) and just received my acceptance email this morning! There wasn’t a lot of information regarding this scholarship online and honestly, this forum is what persuaded me to apply and learn more. They give you 15 days to accept or decline and the email said I would get my financial award letter within a week.

Nice congrats! Do you have any experience with the VA?

Also, if you don't mind answering, when did you submit and get the referral email? Thanks!

just got alternate status as well. I am really hopeful that I still have a chance moving forward. Does anyone know if there is a ranking to the alternate list? Does anyone know if or how many people get picked off of the list? Thanks in advance and congrats to those accepted!

I come from a military family, but do not have any personal experience with the VA.

I submitted 4/20 as I was told to submit early to have a better chance at being accepted and received the referral email when most people did, May 1st when the original deadline was.

That's good to hear! I submitted 04/28 and still awaiting my initial referral. This keeps me hopeful!

I contacted the POC for the scholarship and was told that my application was referred to the scholarship team on 5/11 as they review and send applications every two weeks. You guys may have already been referred as well. I submitted my application 04/28 but my application on usajobs still only shows received under application status. Good Luck!!!

Did you receive an email that you were referred or did you email the POC and they told you, you had been referred. Also is it the email under the contact info you use to contact them?

I emailed VHANationalRecruitmentCenter@va.gov and they forwarded my email to a HR specialist that told me I had been referred. It only took about an hour to get a response.

I don’t know for sure but my boyfriend is a veteran and he said that it sounds like they’re waiting for funding after he read the email. He looked it up and the VA budget hasn’t been approved yet for this year so that could be a big part of it! At this point, I’m just happy with any answer that isn’t “no”!

Hey guys! I submitted my application last Thursday, and it hasn't been referred yet. But I just noticed I had a typo in my resume, so I updated my application today. All the info was saved but it made me resubmit my application all over again. :( Does anyone know if this will result in a later referral?

I just recieved my rejection email and I am completely baffled by it. I am in my 4th year of pharmacy school, I have a 3.58 GPA with good extracurriculars and good recommendations. I don't understand how you could be an alternate when you still have 4 years left and selection is supposed to be preferential for students entering their final year.

Sorry to hear that. Are you a veteran and/or have any experience working within the VA by chance?

Sorry to hear that 😞 but you don’t have to diminish me in the process of your rejection. Your post comes off extremely rude like I am not qualified. If you are able to resubmit, change your dpi size to 100 when you scan so that everything is clear. After this, I’m sure you’ll be selected with your stats and being that you’re a P4. Good luck 👍🏽

Couldn't agree more with your statement, be happy for people, not jealous. Maturity is supporting one another. Ken313627 way to keep it positive and best of luck to you and the rest!

With how late it is into the application cycle For the PA HPSP scholarship, does anyone recommend still applying?

It never hurts to apply! I think you would still have a fair shot this late. I don’t think they award all the money out before the deadline. Still go for it :)!

Thank you! I have a question: I’m currently filling out the application and I don’t see any essay prompts? Are there any essays we need to write or do we simply submit the Evaluation, transcripts, and resume?
