gigy
Hi everyone does anyone know or been through the situation of retaking science classes to improved their grade? I haven't done my best for the past two semenster and getting nothing but C in science classes. I was thinking to retake them but I think I have to wait at least 5 years since after awhile they get old or something like that. My other option was to take them at a community college but I not sure of that since not all their science are upper level. Does anyone know about this? pls, I really need your opinion. I know I have to extrafocus in school, but unfortunately I can't fix the past.
cinntsp
Retaking science classes that you made a C or lower in is a good way to go. Both the old and new grades will be evident on CASPA and be included in your GPA but it still shows that you can handle the coursework. Considering that you have two full semesters of low grades, you will need to continue taking courses and making As to demonstrate that those two semesters were just flukes. It will also need to be addressed in your personal statement. Others will disagree with this sentiment but, imo, you should retake the classes at a university if that's where you made the low grades. If you make all Cs in sciences at a university and then all As at a community college, some might wonder whether the problem is you not being able to handle more rigorous coursework. Disclaimer: some CC classes are just as hard or harder than uni classes and there is nothing wrong with taking classes at a CC when it comes to PA admissions(unless a school states as much)...but we all know that people assume that CC classes are easier and some of those people will be on adcoms. greenmood
Retake the classes now, if you can. I recommend community college for summer breaks and for those who've already graduated from wherever they did their bachelors. What is your major?
gigy
I was Biology major, but since my GPA its not getting any better with science my advisor suggested Health Science Major before it gets worst. Also, because I feel like I've been taking so many classes that I would not need for PA school, and you have to take that into account when you"re paying for your classes. However, I will be taking all the science required for the program but nothing else. thank you guys for the advise.
greenmood
Something to consider: PA school is a medical science curriculum, and it is intense. Imagine taking all the sciences you're taking now, replacing your non-science classes with sciences, adding three more science classes, and then doing it for an entire year where there is no curve and you're expected to get a B on every test. I'm hoping you see that you've got to find out why you're not doing well in sciences. It isn't going to end when you're done with pre-reqs. I do think if you're struggling badly it would be a good idea to back off the upper levels until you figure out what's going on. If a shift in majors will do that for you, go for it. I'm not a fan of people getting a degree for no reason, just as a stepping stone to PA school. Do you like Health Sciences? What will happen if you graduate with it and don't get into PA school? Can you do anything with it in the working world? You can major in anything in undergrad and still go to PA school. So choose wisely.
GatorRRT
Check with PA programs you're interested in to see if they accept CC classes for prefeqs, the majority don't care as long as you performed well. I used to be of the opinion that CC classes couldn't be nearly as difficult as their university counterparts.....that was until I took hemodynamics. With retaking two prereqs at the CC level, I was admitted to my first choice school first round, YMMV.
Will352ns
I'm in the process of retaking some classed that I received C's in. It is a pain, but at the end of the day, I got the material down and the my science GPA has gone up a bit.
gigy
Are you repeating the classes in the same University or in another?
Will352ns
Are you repeating the classes in the same University or in another? Different. I have noticed a big difference in the level of instruction. The original classes were from a CC, I am currently doing the retakes with UNE (online). Don't let the online fool you, they are much more in depth than the other ones. I am also re-hacking Anatomy and Physiology due to the fact my old classes are 12 years old. The BioChem through them is good, but that is off topic.
