Pain Medication in the E.R.

Recommended Posts

I use California's CURES drug tracking website - it is nice to print the patient's prescription fills for 900 tablets of vicodin, soma, and ativan in the past 2 months and gingerly place the printout in their hands.  We don't have many repeat drug seekers at my job.  Again, this tracking site is only for the state of California...so visitors from out of state can get away with more.

As Emed mentioned several entries ago - I do utilize Ativan and even Vistaril to calm people down, and it seems to help their pain threshold.  I also tell people - especially suspected seekers that are still complaining about pain after narcotics - that we may only be able to decrease pain to a degree, but not completely remove the pain.  This way, I don't end up repeating IM injections of Dilaudid or Morphine, and discharge the patient faster.
