physasst
Yeah, I gave Larry and Josann my condolences already. Larry will be good, have known him for years, and he was good when he was on CSAC..... Lowest voting turnout in years if I read that right though.....

jdtpac
Larry was the only presidential candidate willing to explore name change. this is a win for us.also , he is an em pa. My condolences to the “Name Change Committee”, it appears as though you're grassroots campaign to get pro-title change candidates elected to the AAPA BOD was not as successful as you would have like it to be. But you should be commended for your efforts. Both of your write-in candidates received less than 150 votes and your self-declared candidate did not do well. You might be able to take solace in the fact your endorsed candidates for President-elect won, however; based on the results of your other endorsed candidates I doubt if you're endorsement factored in the outcome for the office of President-elect. However, your issue is far from derailed. If you have your pro-title change supporters contact their delegates to the HOD or show up at the HOD and testify during reference committee C you'll find that there are 3 separate resolutions addressing this issue. I just had a long conversation with one of the members of your committee and we both agreed the best solution at this point is to encourage the Academy to develop a task force made up of a diverse group of PAs that would be charged with researching all the ramifications of a title change and reporting that back to every member of the profession, not just Academy members. The Texas Academy has submitted a resolution, 2012-C-05, that addresses this issue. Tell your supporters to endorse this resolution, I (we) believe it is in the best interest of the future of the Academy and security of our profession. The name change may not be official...but many PAs will be calling themselves and introducing themselves as Physician Associates.....whether it's official or not.. jdtpac
The name change may not be official...but many PAs will be calling themselves and introducing themselves as Physician Associates.....whether it's official or not.. Be careful what you say or do, because in many states it would be illegal for you to use the title Physician Associate. Many years ago we had a PA in our state who was investigated by the medical board because a patient complained that the PA was misrepresenting themself. In our state, you must not only call your self by the appropriate title Physician assistant, but you also must wear a name tag demonstrating that you are a PA or physician assistant. Both the PA and physician were repramanded and license suspended for 90 day. Do you want that happening to you and your colleagues? I think not. Yale does, and Yale New Haven hospital also calls their PA's "Associate", but their Connecticut license says "Assistant". You can have institutional guidelines that allow this, but most do not. Most states do not allow it either. To be honest, I'm not sure on the Connecticut rules, and how the New Haven hospital does this, but it's the only one that I am aware of, although there may be others that I have no knowledge of. But you should be commended for your efforts. . a few comments: see today's aapa census results. a majority of those wiling to state a preference on this poorly written and biased survey are in favor of a title change. the HOD/BOD can not ignore the results of the aapa survey. In brief, among the nearly 15,000 PAs who answered these questions, 45.5 percent were in favor of a title change, 33.6 percent were against and 20.9 percent indicated they were either not sure, interested or preferred not to answer the question. only 1/3 came out against. with 4.5% more folks coming out in favor this would have been a true majority....read another way almost 1/2 of all respondents are in favor and 67% are either in favor or unsure. I view these election results as indicative of the fact that many folks supporting name have already left the aapa and were therefore ineligible to vote..I don't recommend leaving the aapa based on a single issue(and I remain a member) but I know many folks have and many more likely will if this issue goes unresolved yet again.. Most PA's I have encountered at Yale-New Haven Hospital call themselves physician assistants. The only thing that officially says "Associate" is the PA program (and thus the degrees it awards). Because of the program name, some people use "physician associate" colloquially but I'm not aware of an institution policy that declares them "associates" over "assistants." Sometimes I see "associate/assistant" written just to cover everything.

surgblumm
If you believe "right away" than get your delegates at the HOD to vote positively at the three Associate questions. We need to have the 2012 HOD to say a resounding "Yes" so that the BOD is charged with making it reality . Reality can mean within a year if we push together. Join us in the fight and let's win together. Bob Blumm
