pavlovacloud
My work use to pay for my NCCPA certificate maintenance ($150) but this year they say it has to come out of our CME allowance instead. CME money should be used for continuing EDUCATION, not a "maintenance" fee. Does anyone have to use their own CME allowance for the "maintenance" fee? mgriffiths
Every job I have ever had was this way...but I do agree with you.
medic25
Separate fund. Our hospital pays separately for licensures/certifications that are required to practice (e.g. state license, DEA, NCCPA).
ohiovolffemtp
At my former FT EM job my CME allowance of $2,500/yr was all that I was given by my employer to cover licenses, DEA, NCCPA, CME, etc. My 2 other PT EM positions treat their FT employees the same way and as PT I get no CME. My new FT EM job has no CME allowance but did pay for all of the expenses associated with me getting licensed in a new state for them. However, I'll be responsible for all ongoing certifications, licensing, etc. However, since the pay is 30% more, I'm OK with that.

I've intentionally had my compensation biased towards CME/licensing/fees, so I don't have to take that money as income, to minimize my tax liability. ohiovolffemtp
Yes, I have. Right now the employer doesn't want to do that. They're pretty responsive, so I'm guessing that few other employees have asked for it and would rather have the money as compensation vs expense reimbursement. I totally agree about the tax implications - that's why I asked.
sas5814
My employer will pay for the actual exam but the fees are mine or I can take them out of what is a pitiful annual CME allowance.
pavlovacloud
My CME allowance is pitiful too. It's good they pay for your boards. My employer also makes us pay for our own boards with CME money. We providers also have to pay $100 per year from our CME to get a yearly UptoDate subscription too. -_-
Cideous
Most places including mine now throw it into one pot. The years my DEA is due really suck. $700 bucks ouch.
Reality Check 2
The VA doesn't pay for that, or your license. My DEA is govt exempt - free, as long as I only work at the VA. And, now the tax laws changed and no more business deductions..... Awesome.
ResusMachine
DEA comes out of pocket and cannot be covered by CME. I don't believe we can even use CME funds to cover license fees or any other maintenance fees. Maybe it's time i asked for another raise?... pavlovacloud
I'm sorry to hear you have to pay DEA out of pocket. My friend who works in Salinas seems very fortunate. Her company pays for her DEA, certificate maintenance, license fees, and boards (even the boards she first took after graduation) OUTSIDE CME allowance. They want them to actually use CME allowance for education.
Joelseff
My old job (current one, tomorrow is my wake up call! [emoji4]) didn't pay jack. My new job (Starting April 1st) will pay my AAPA, CAPA, DEA, State License, NCCPA etc and if I join a GI society. My CME will also be covered up to 2500 per year. Quite refreshing actually.
