Physician Assistant Fellowship: Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery

The Departments of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery at J.H. Stroger Hospital (Cook County Hospital) and Northwestern University School of Medicine have partnered to offer a 1 year post-graduate Physician Assistant Fellowship in Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery. This is a newly developed program designed to recruit applicants to begin the 12-month specialty program upon completion of certification and licensing in Illinois. We seek to attract two fellows into the program each year.

The purpose of this program is to provide comprehensive medical and surgical training in all areas of the field of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery. Upon completion of the program, graduating fellows will possess the medical knowledge base and technical skill set to confidently launch into clinical practice. Given the prevalence of ‘ENT’ disease, the successful fellow will be an invaluable asset in a variety of clinical arenas including Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, and of course Otolaryngology in both private and academic settings alike.

Curriculum

Fellows with receive clinical and didactic training at Stroger Hospital (Cook County Hospital) and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The academic year will consist of four 3-month blocks with fellows alternating between the two hospitals every 3 months. Clinical experiences will include outpatient clinic, operating room experience, in-patient rounds and consults, emergency room consults, as well as night/weekend consultation. The didactic otolaryngology curriculum consists of a robust collection of academic conferences including core lectures, grand rounds, morbidity and mortality conference, and multidisciplinary head and neck tumor conference.

Program Goals

At the conclusion of the fellowship program, fellows will have attained proficiency in the following areas:

  • Broad knowledge base of otolaryngology disease that presents in both outpatient and inpatient settings
  • Management of patients from the initial consultation through operating room and inpatient management followed by post-operative outpatient follow-up
  • Surgical skills in the operating room that includes prep/draping, surgical instrumentation, suturing, and surgical assistance
  • Minor office procedures (fine needle aspiration, fiberoptic laryngoscopy, simple biopsy, nasal endoscopy and packing, etc.)
  • Initial management of common otolaryngology problems that arise in an emergency room or in-patient setting
  • Airway and tracheotomy tube management

Hours: The PA fellows will be expected to adhere to a full didactic and clinical curriculum that generally equates to 10 hours per day, 5 days per week. The fellows will also be expected to participate in shared night/weekend call that will not be greater than every fourth night on average. Clinical duties for a fellow are expected at only one institution at any given time, though fellows may travel between the two campuses for certain didactic experiences.

Accreditation:

The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) is the organization that accredits clinical postgraduate PA programs. The Cook County Hospital EM-PA residency program has begun the application process for accreditation, and anticipates the approval of full accreditation.
