Suit or no suit...that is the question

Recommended Posts

My understanding is that they are not required but are a social norm. Think of this like a job interview with many other applicants competing for the same spot. You don't want to be the one person that they interviewed that didn't have a suit on. Like lctexas4 said above it is better to be overdressed then under dressed. If you are worried about the cost of the suit then one tip that I got from a professor is to go to a thrift shop on the wealthier side of the city. There are bound to be suits available there that are still in fairly good condition.

This is the correct response.  Everyone else will be wearing a suit.  You'll look and feel like a fool most likely if you don't...follow suit.

Har har.. I actually didn't wear a suit to the interview and felt only slightly weird, but ultimately I felt good, comfortable, and professional.  We will see if it works in my favor ?My personality is the opposite of a suit ? but after hearing what folks have to say, I'm going to continue my search for one for later interviews ?

Thank you all for the responses! I'll look into a nicer thrift shop. ?

I should also clarify - I'm a woman!

Suits for everyone, men and women.  Aside from the tie, all the other comments still apply.  I've seen very few women show up NOT in a suit.  I've seen a small handful pull off a funky blazer that otherwise fit in line with business professional attire.

I just think it's best to play it safe and not take any chances on an interview like that but if you can genuinely pull it off, then by all means wear whatever is comfortable.  On a side note, if your looking for a decent suit for under $100, I bought one on amazon recently and the fit was surprisingly good.  It was completely interview-worthy out of the box (but definitely looked much better after a little tailoring).

Tuxedo! You can never overdress.... jk jk

suit jacket, dress shirt, tie, and suit pants and you'll be fine. Black, navy, dark blue (Which is navy right?) or gray suit would work. DON't overthink it, but seriously don't under dress

Thank you :) Love your avatar btw @.@
