Guest thePAway
I applied this cycle knowing my chances of getting in were very slim since I still have another year of undergrad with a couple outstanding pre recs and only 600 PCE at my time of application. I still have not heard back from schools but I went into this cycle knowing I would most likely not get in but wanted to make myself look more competitive by being a second time app next cycle. My question is: besides getting more PCE throughout my senior year of undergrad what else do I need to change as a reapplicant? I like my personal statement, does it look lazy if I do not change it? Do I need to change who I got my rec letters from? I have a very strong GPA so besides maintaining that my senior year I do not know what else I should be planning to change on my application as a reapplicant to show my commitment to the field other than gaining more PCE
PACrankset
So to answer some question. Yes it will look lazy if you don’t change your personal statement. You can use the same sources for LORs. In terms of other things, the GRE is one thing, even if all your current schools don’t require it, taking it will open up more schools. Volunteering can be an important aspect as it shows commitment to service of your community. Shadowing also looks good. As you said if your GPA is good then HCE is your major point to work on. MT2PA
PCE, shadowing, volunteering. GRE if you haven't taken it. Yes you need to at least tweak your statement. Recs can BE from the same people, but they will have to resubmit them (they don't carry over). As an aside for anyone else reading this, I'm not convinced being a second time applicant makes a person more competitive. Applying to get in RIGHT after undergrad is rare. Better to save the application money and have one amazing app and get in on the first try.
UGoLong
Are you saying that, in one year, you haven't learned anything about yourself or your prospective career? You statement is a chance to step outside of the stats and interest schools in interviewing you. It's not a box to check.
Jchen14
The biggest mistake you can make is NOT improving your application year to year. You literally will look the exact same on paper when you submit your app which can actually have a negative impact. I would say your biggest focus is your PCE/HCE. A year's worth of full time work (40 hrs/week) is approx. 2000 hours. You can use the same template for your personal statement but absolutely change it to reflect what's changed since your last app. Take the GRE like others have recommended because doing so will only open that many more doors for your unless your only applying to schools that don't require it. Good luck!
Guest thePAway
Thanks for the suggestions, I did already take the GRE so I will work in changing my personal statement and increasing PCE, volunteer, and shadowing.
