Any vets using or have used V.A. Voc Rehab for PA?

Recommended Posts

I don't know if using Voc Rehab will help, but some schools that I got accepted to did ask how I planned on funding my education. I said a combination of GI Bill and loans. Applying as a Marine will make you stand out because Marines are cocky and there's not that many applying.

To answer the first part of your question, I completed my undergrad in less than 36 mo and am using the remainder of my bill to supplement federal student loans for my first semester of PA.  Currently in the process of applying for Voc rehab which, if granted, would be freaking awesome.

initially, I dont see how declaring yourself as a GI Bill user woud improve your chances of acceptance.  On the other hand the question of how you plan to fund or commute to PA school often arises during interview.  So perhaps you're onto something...idk...Perhaps a former adcom member could chime in.  I don't imagine big non profit universities to care much.  But perhaps For Profit schools show favoritism towards GI Bill users since the funds are federally backed?

Also, just want to throw out for those who may not be aware; a 12 month extension on your post 9/11 GI bill will go into effect for STEM related degrees August 2019.  Thats a good chunk of PA school for most people...

I have been using Voc Rehab to pay for tuition during undergrad and I still have a significant amount of GI bill benefits remaining as well. My question is once I use up the 12 months of Voc Rehab educational benefits (which covers 100% of tuition regardless of private or public school) and switch back to using the GI bill, will I have to pay some tuition and fees out of pocket seeing as the post 9/11 GI bill only covers the instate tuition rate? Thank you!

Are you able provide any other info or resource reagrding the 12 mo extension? Does that mean 12 months of additional funding (upon approval?) or a 'time' extension?

Thank you

Any update on the Voc Rehab? I exhausted my Post 911 on undergrad. Contacted the VA about the 12 month extension you mentioned but also curious about Voc rehab

I know this thread is a bit old but I am currently going through this with the VA and Voc Rehab. I used a good chunk of my MGIB on my associates to get my Paramedic and have been working for about 5 years with that. I went back to my local VA office and talked to them about voc rehab and my options for further education. She advised to just apply for Voc Rehab and see what they can do. Voc Rehab has their own counselors in that area and you will get assigned to one. Once the Voc rehab counselor calls/emails you they will set up an interview time (you also do a career assessment test online) The counselor will look at your disability compensation and your specific disability to determine whether you can continue your current profession or if Voc Rehab can help. My counselor agreed that with my specific disability rating, current profession and my educational/career goals that PA would be a good fit and I was approved for Voc Rehab. As I mentioned before I had less than a year left on my MGIB and still had to attain my Bachelors and then PA school so my counselor had to put in for a time extension just shy of 4 years (2 for bachelors-2 for PA) it took about 2 weeks and she called back and said I was approved for the extension. Now I just need to finalize which school for bachelors and a list of PA programs I will apply to after that. Just be aware that this is only my circumstances and I have had an amazing VSO and Voc Rehab counselor even though i am in the early stages of Voc Rehab. Just apply for Voc rehab and talk to your assigned counselor, be advised that once you get the ball rolling they push you along with calls/emails every couple of weeks and make it a priority to keep you moving forward .
