Resume help first post Army job

Recommended Posts

So all of us who have been in the military know that they are pretty set in how you do things, i.e. how to apply for programs new jobs etc. and they have specific formats that they want and tell you how to do. I have been through the transition classes and feel that some of their resume points are helpful while many are not applicable to the medical field. I am mostly interested in FP or EM positions I believe. So here goes....

For work experience, I have been in 3 different units on 2 different bases but basically the same job however: Battalion PA. The units were slightly different with different requirements but the specific differences are not applicable to jobs that I plan on applying to (Occupational health requirements for Toxic/Chemical Unit and for Aviation unit).  Should I list these as separate jobs or just one position. As I mentioned the job duties were essentially the same and I have no wish to work in Occupational Health...I can highlight some of the stuff IF I apply to Urgent Care as most of these jobs also do Occupational health. So one position or separate ?

I was obviously not in as long as you, but when I was applying I listed one job: US Navy; Physician Assistant. Under that heading I listed my different positions (FM PA, Battalion PA, Ship PA) and the duties they entailed separately, even though battalion and ship PA were pretty much the same.

Agreed with above. My Army experience is listed under one heading with multiple sub-sections of the things I did/positions held. I truly believe you need to edit the resume based on the job you're applying for. Even as a PA, highlighting certain areas for applying to different gigs as well as having an individual cover letter for the positions plays a big part.

Congratulations on your transition to the civilian side of the house.

Well, I was in the Army a long time but only a PA for 4 ish years. I dont plan on including a whole lot from my pre PA life.

Thanks to both of you that sounds a lot better. If I held some higher positions it would make a difference but since I have less than 7 months left in uniform Im trying to avoid responsibility like the plague despite my recent promotion.

If you held 2 entirely different positions, like army infantry and then an army pa, I would place those separately. You’re right to highlight the PA portion, but would listed every position as a PA as a different job.

Yeah i was a pa for combined arms battalion (infantry/armor) aeromedical pa for an aviation battalion, and now battalion pa for a technical escort battalion (chemical, only battalion in the army that does toxic entry/ chemical weapons remediation). Day to day duties essentially the same tho for all.
