nixietink
This question is probably answered somewhere on this forum, but I'm having a hard time finding it. Are preparatory chemistry courses (pre gen chem) calculated into your science CASPA GPA?

Monmich8
I have a question regarding GPA too! I have more than 1 class that can fulfill some requirements. Can I use the class that I got a better grade in? Or will CASPA and the schools look at all of them equally? For example, some schools say Calculus or Statistics....if i took both will they consider both grades or just the better one? Thanks!

IdahoPA
They'll have access to your entire transcript and you have to enter all of your classes on CASPA so...they'll know both.

Monmich8
ok thanks for a quick answer. I guess my question was do you think having both considered could help or hurt me?

IdahoPA
Assuming you did well in both, I think it's a (small) advantage. To help, I've taken biochem, O Chem I and II and a slew of other classes that aren't necessary for PA school. I think it shows a more well-rounded applicant. Even if not, you'll still have those skills and they'll likely come in handy later. If you're specifically asking about the grades...I'm not sure how each school decides which they'll use. You could call them, but I don't think it's that big of a deal.

Administrator rev ronin Posted March 23, 2012 Administrator Share Posted March 23, 2012 The more science you have, the better. The better your grades in that science, the better. The interplay between those two ("Will more higher level biology courses, even if they drop my science GPA somewhat, be better than not?") likely varies from Adcom to Adcom. swimbikerun4fun
Do any of you know what this means on the CASPA website: Under the heading "Other Science", it says Athletic Training (not PE Course) - specifically, what does "not PE Course" mean? Does it mean there are some colleges/universities out there that have Athletic Training in the biology department - sarcasm here - . In my Exercise Physiology degree, all my courses where in the PE department. My Dietetics degree, however, had classes from various departments. I got A's in Athletic Training, Exercise Physiology, First Aid/CPR, Kinesiology, Nutrition and Pharmacology. These courses are all listed in this "Other Science" heading, but only Athletic Training has the "not PE course) thing added. Anyone here know or should I ask CASPA? There are classes out there that people take as electives where they just exercise. Ya know...like taking PE in elementary/middle school. I'm sure that's what they are referring to. IdahoPA
^Exactly. I took weight-lifting (2x!), step aerobics, kick-boxing, yoga, archery, ballroom dance, prob a few others. Those classes clearly wouldn't count as science. Not sure where the sarcasm is necessary in that sentence, but at my school there is overlap with the bio dept. (A&P among others...) swimbikerun4fun
Oh Ok thanks for helping me understand, of course I can make things more difficult than they are...lalewis, what I meant was, geez, since when did the biology dept start purchasing athletic tape - as that is what my athletic training course in college taught me - how to tape for various injuries - i am sorry i did not better explain myself - thanks again for helping me understand, taking it that those courses i mentioned in my original question will all be counted towards my science GPA - woo hoo that helps bring it up even higher!
