jmj11
You've seen the news in the past few days when airline steward lost his cool, vented with profanities about his customers over the intercom, grabbed two beers and exited by the emergency shoot. So, have you ever felt this way? Is Slater a hero (as some have suggested) or a out of control bad boy that needs a lot of punishment?
marilynpac
From what I understand this is a "first" for him. Most likely a last too. I certainly don't call him a hero, or do I call him a bad boy in need of alot of punishment. But maybe in need of counseling during his midlife crisis that came to a head. We all have our breaking pt and Mr. Slater unfortunately had his at an inopportune time, with cameras rolling. A good therapist will help, Rx if needed, alot of support from family and friends. Have I ever felt this way? I went through severe hyperthyroidism...get my point?
EMSArtist
I really want to pull a hostile walkout about once a week... and then a patient comes along that actually NEEDS help and it puts it all in perspective. I do recall exactly how good it feels to tell an a-h boss where exactly they should shove the crappy job and walk out into the waiting arms of the evening. I suppose I'll probably live the rest of my life on that brilliant moment.... PS- My partner and I have developed a shockingly awesome plan... we might never use it, but it would be sweet :-)

Guest cabkrun
I can't say I blame him at all. Being cussed out by some rude, entitled woman and smacked in the head with a suitcase .... I think she should be charged as well. I get that every job has it moments of abuse, but airline passengers and their sense of entitlement can be over the top. The job he performs can be a bit degrading as well, especially for a man. The rules are pretty clear and simple to follow when flying, some people just think they do not apply to them. I find myself smiling at what he did. Surprised he held it together for 20 years. :heheh:
smitty6572
I'm for people acting with honor and dignity at all times. If he didn't like his job.......he should quit...after he found another place to work. What he did was childish and I think calculated to get attention. There are honorable ways to get attention, this is not one of them. I certainly would never hire him after this incident.
Evan
Well, he's getting his 15 minutes, that's for sure... If he's smart he'll capitalize on it. After all, he is out of job and, let's face it, the economy sucks... This guy really illustrates the fine line between folk hero and dumba$$... There is never an excuse for being a dumba$$. Don't get me wrong.....I have been a dumba$$....there just is no excuse for it. I hope that we all have high standards of conduct that we hold for human beings of all stripes that even we ourselves don't measure up to at all times. I know I do. jmj11
My practice is a business and my patients are my customers. Therefore, like Walmart or any business, you have to function with the attitude, "The Customer is Always Right" up until a point. Then there is the line in the sand that if they cross you fire them in a professional and courteous way. Its those who are just inside the line that make you want to pull a Slater. Those whom you are 85% sure are lying to you, but you are not 100%. Those who you are 85% sure are non-compliant, but not 100% sure. Those who are always irritable, call frequently, manipulative but never swear at you or violate any practice rules for termination. But you always give the patient the benefit of the doubt. I feel the guy's pain but agree he didn't handle it well. It may cost him $$ in the long run . . . unless he cashes in on his new, found celebrity status. EMSArtist
I think that the economy keeps people in jobs that they hate because they know they probably can't find another one. When people feel trapped they eventually lash out, and I think we are going to be seeing more of this. And yeah these people are going to become folk heroes because people see in them their dreams fulfilled. As for acting with "honor" it's a hard to act honorably day after day when dishonorable people take figurative $#its on your head, along with management. Eventually even the most patient and honorable person will have more than they can take.
Evan
The Dave Ross Show · MyNorthwest.com So Dave Ross had the above to say this morning about our friend Slater and the reactions to his little stunt... The best part was when Ross (on the radio this morning not, unfortunately, at the link above) suggested that everyone work harder so management cannot find an excuse to fire us... and that would really tick 'em off! I rarely find myself in agreement with 'ol Dave but this time he has a point...
Iain1028
I hate hate hate it when someone brings something to eat on a plane that is strong smelling, that should be banned. I also can't stand little kids/babies crying and kicking the back of your seat. That should be banned. I don't blame the guy, flying sucks unless you can afford first class, then it is cool.
