LKPAC
I see that ACS still only allows PAs to audit. Why isn't AAPA doing something about this discrimination? Yes, I know some of you have taken ATLS and passed, but ACS considers PAs to be not truly certified no matter what your paper says.
CAdamsPAC
I have my ATLS certificate on the wall after taking it December 2016.
Boatswain2PA
I've taken it twice.
LKPAC
Yes, but according to the ACS website, you audited the course. They do NOT consider you truly certified, which is only for physicians. I hope I'm wrong.
EDtech
I was able to take it while in school.
MCHAD
I took it and got a certificate saying I passed...my certificate says nothing about auditing. In fact at my class they pointed out the people auditing
Moderator LT_Oneal_PAC Posted December 21, 2017 Moderator Share Posted December 21, 2017 Mine as shown. Don’t like the physician extended labeling. I was also pretty pissed when they asked me to instruct then rescinded the offer when they found out I was a PA, because we can’t be instructors per ACS.
Boatswain2PA
My cert doesn't say anything about audit. Got same certificate as the EPs in the class.
thinkertdm
"Physician extender" always sounds like a late night infomercial product. But wait! There's more...!
BirdDogPA
The ATLS class I took more PA and NPs were there than physicians. I was also able to take the class while in PA school and my card says nothing about "auditing".
Moderator EMEDPA Posted December 21, 2017 Moderator Share Posted December 21, 2017 on the acs site there is a search function for classes. if you select "allows physician extenders" you should get a card. I have taken it 6 times and gotten cards the most recent 4 times.
AprilMedicPA
Are you able to take this course as a PA student? I tried emailing about a class at a local hospital and got nothing but crickets in reply. I'd like to have this cert before graduating and applying to emergency positions. Moderator EMEDPA Posted December 22, 2017 Moderator Share Posted December 22, 2017 I took it a week before starting clinicals as a pa student in 1995 at the hospital affiliated with my program. my first rotation was trauma surgery so I thought it was a good idea. it was.

Yes you are, I took mine about 6 months ago while still in PA school. I just wouldn't make a big deal about it and sign up for the class and no one will probably question it. AprilMedicPA
Good to know. Now to find the $600+ it would cost to take it as a poor PA student....
TeddyRucpin
Reviving this from the dead. Took the class over the weekend with mostly residents, some attendings, and a few RNs. I checked the ATLS card from a anesthesiologist friend in the class and both of ours say “provider.”

That would be awesome. I’ve taken the gamut of alphabet courses as a medic; most are BS these days (open book tests and dumbed down to the lowest common denominator). ATLS was awesome and very interesting; it was really worth it.
